About this listen

On a quiet park bench in Manhattan - just miles from the ruins of the World Trade Center - a spymaster delivers a chilling secret message to Jake Grafton: A rogue Russian general has sold four nuclear warheads to a radical Islamic terrorist group, the Sword of Islam. The group intends to detonate them in America in the ultimate terror strike, the apocalypse that will trigger a holy war between Western civilization and the Muslim world.

After passing the message on to his peers, Grafton is charged by the president with assembling a secret team to find the warheads before America's population centers are consumed by a nuclear holocaust.

As he hunts for terrorists, Grafton soon finds himself up to his neck in power politics, techno-billionaires, money-grubbing traitors, anarchists, and spies. He also discovers that the terrorists don't all come from the Middle East. They come from places close to home. They masquerade as patriots. Some may even have the president's ear.

With the survival of Western civilization at stake, Grafton pulls out all the stops. Calling on the assistance of the indomitable Toad Tarkington, and CIA burglar Tommy Carmellini, he raids the prisons to assemble his team while the clock ticks toward Armageddon.

Take another thrill ride with Jake Grafton.©2004 Stephen Coonts (P)2004 Brilliance Audio

Critic reviews

"The action is slam-bang, and shifts in point of view accelerate the tension. The climax...is made for the movies." ( Publishers Weekly)
"Guerin Barry's resonant voice and crisp delivery enliven the fast pace of this story. Dialects are authentic and well presented.... Liberty should be near the top of the listening lists of all adventure lovers." ( AudioFile)

This book introduces a lot of characters and I found it a bit much to keep track of it all. That being said the storyline is plausible and well developed. For me the first 2/3 of the book felt long and I found my mind wandering a bit. The last scene is a good payoff. The reader does a good job with various voices and inflections. I will listen to more from this author but I will be selective.

Guerin Barry did a great job, I got over Benjamin Darcie not narrating. The story was exciting and fast paced, I really enjoy the Jake Grafton series.

Great book, fast paced

This is a great thriller that reminds us of what could happen where it not for the anonymous guardians that protect modern society.

Last of the Jake Grafton series, Jake, Toad and Carmelini save the US from a nuclear terrorist or two. Rife with bureaucratic one-upsmanship that almost kills the deal, the author winds through it and everyone wins. Where will Jake Grafton be when this actually happens to the USA?

This is my kind of story -- an explosive thriller set against a backdrop of terrorism aimed at the US. I followed with enthusiasm until I was assaulted by a single word which took me away from the story and propelled me into another painful place and time -- someplace I hope to never be in again. That word made it difficult for me to continue -- but finally I did. If not for that word, I could have thoroughly enjoyed the book.

Sticks and Stones

Jake is one of my favorite characters. I enjoyed the story, one main issue though. One character in the story referred to Jake as a "lightweight". Everyone who read Jake's military history would never refer to him as a "lightweight/featherweight.

Enjoyed the story.

one of the better storylines in the series, believable story, plausible if a bit contrived which is to be expected in these types of stories.

The plot is scarily possible in today's world politics; I'll leave it at that for you to discover for yourself. Coonts sets up Tommy Carmelinni as the next lead character (I won't 'spoil alert' Grafton's future). The narrator does a good job, but not as good as the first narrator (books 1 - 8) but far better than the last. I hope he continues with the series.

VERY good listen

Wonderful book. Stephen Coonts and W.E.B.Griffin are very similar authors. If you like W.E.B your sure to like Stephen.
