Critic reviews

"Cussler takes a breather from his several ongoing series with this historical thriller set in the western states, circa 1906. The U.S. government hires the renowned Van Dorn Detective Agency and its equally renowned lead agent, Isaac Bell, to capture the bank robber known as the Butcher Bandit....Once San Francisco gets hit by the 1906 earthquake and the principals climb aboard a pair of fire-breathing locomotives, the novel cranks up a head of steam and some high-speed thrills." a good action packed thriller

Would you consider the audio edition of The Chase to be better than the print version?

didn't read the print version

Who was your favorite character and why?

Isaac Bell, he is in every scene

What does Scott Brick bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

It sounded like a western cowboy was reading it

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

no

Any additional comments?

I feel bad but Brick gets on my nerves a little bit with his 'good ol' boy' reading style, but it might be the content, too. I listen to Cussler because my Mom and Sister listen to his series but I am not the biggest fan of traditional roles of men being the superhero saviors of everyone.

Average thriller

What did you like best about The Chase? What did you like least?

Story was a little different because it was set back in time. Not a modern mystery so I was able to learn some facts about the time period. I just can t explain it. I was just not that excited. It did keep my attention long enough to get through and it made my mind work hard to visualize. Especially his car.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

I would have tried to make it more suspenseful.

What three words best describe Scott Brick’s performance?

Just okay

Did The Chase inspire you to do anything?

Yes, order another book by Cussler to see if they get better.

Any additional comments?

Maybe because I am a woman I did not enjoy it as much. I will see. I ordered two more books.

Chase the first book of Clyde counselors that I have listened to you for red. Eagerly looking forward to the next books. Story history and descriptions what's the excellent. Did not feel that anything was super extraordinary or impossible. would recommend this for a road trip anyone who does a lot of driving something to listen to that will keep their mind active.

Predictable but fun

Predictable plot. Two dimensional characters.

Very good narration.

A fun listen while stuck in traffic on the commute to Boston.

Fun read!

Story is a cross between 007 and Murdoch Mysteries. A great romp. A few history lessons thrown in for good measure.

My 1st Cussler...very good

I'm a huge fan of anything "old west" and even more so Re: the days of the old railroads. The plot was excellent, the narration very well done. I've purchased the 1st 6 in the Issac Bell series. If they are as good as this one, I will enjoy greatly.

Flipping the script

Flipping the Dirk Pitt script. Bell, the turn of the century detective, man's man, relentless pursuer. I enjoyed the differences between both Dirk Pitt and Issac Bell. Good read, enjoy.
