About this listen
Audiobook read by Stephen Colbert and Father John Quigley
For the first time, Pope Francis tells the story of his life as he looks back on the momentous world events that have changed history—from his earliest years during the outbreak of World War II in 1939 to the turmoil of today.
An extraordinary personal and historical journey, Life is the story of a man and a world in dramatic change. Pope Francis recalls his life through memories and observations of the most significant occurrences of the past eight decades. The book opens with three-year-old Jorge in the kitchen with his mother in Argentina as World War II breaks out, and he goes on to witness several historic events:
- the fall of the Berlin Wall
- Videla’s coup in Argentina
- the moon landing in 1969
- and even the 1986 World Cup in which Maradona scored the unforgettable “hand of God” goal.
Here are the frank assessments and intimate insights of a pastor reflecting on the Nazi extermination of the Jews, the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the 2001 terrorist attack on America and the collapse of the Twin Towers, the great economic recession of 2008, the Covid-19 pandemic, the retirement of Pope Benedict XVI, and the subsequent conclave that elected him Pontiff.
The “pope callejero” recounts these world-changing moments with the candor and compassion that distinguishes him, and offers important messages on major crises confronting us now, including social inequalities, climate change, international war, atomic weapons, racial discrimination, and the battles over social and cultural issues.

To Love and Be Loved is a firsthand account of Mother Teresa’s last years, and the first book ever to detail her dealings with worldly matters. We see her gracefully navigate the opportunities and challenges of leadership, the perils of celebrity, and the humiliations and triumphs of aging. We also catch her indulging in chocolate ice cream, making jokes about mini-skirts, and telling the president of the United States he’s wrong. Above all, we see her extraordinary devotion to God and to the very poorest of His children.

In 2007, Joseph Ratzinger published his first book as Pope Benedict XVI in order “to make known the figure and message of Jesus”. Now, the Pope focuses exclusively on the Gospel accounts of Jesus’ life as a child. The root of these stories is the experience of hope found in the birth of Jesus and the affirmations of surrender and service embodied in his parents, Joseph and Mary.

The enlightenment you seek in other religions has been present in Christianity from the beginning. Richard Rohr, a global leader in spiritual awakening, helps you recognize the forces (such as ego resistance and dual thinking) that separate you from your deeper self. Then, drawing from Gospels and the greatest Christian contemplatives, he shows you what it means to be spiritually awake. You will learn why your ego resists change and growth, what is useful about popular ideas such as the law of attraction, what Jesus, the first mythical leader in the West, can teach you.

Two years before he died, St. Thomas Aquinas, probably the greatest teacher the Church has ever known, was asked by his assistant Brother Reginald to write a simple summary of the faith of the Catholic Church for those who lacked the time or the stamina to tackle his massive Summa Theologica. In response, the great saint quickly set down in language that non-scholars can understand his peerless insights into the major topics of theology: the Trinity, Divine Providence, the Incarnation of Christ, the Last Judgment, and much more.

The Vatican's silence in the face of Nazi atrocities remains one of the great controversies of our time. History has accused wartime pontiff Pius the Twelfth of complicity in the Holocaust and dubbed him "Hitler's Pope". But a key part of the story has remained untold. Pius ran the world's largest church, smallest state, and oldest spy service. Saintly but secretive, he skimmed from church charities to pay covert couriers, and surreptitiously tape-recorded his meetings with top Nazis.

Story
Two thousand years ago, Jesus said, "Follow me." What if the 21st-century Church actually heeded that call? What would the world look like if the Church were truly on the move? Simply put, very different. But these ponderings beg one more critical question: What exactly should the Church be moving toward?

Story
In 2012, Dr. Karen King, a star religion professor at Harvard, announced a breathtaking discovery just steps from the Vatican: she’d found an ancient scrap of papyrus in which Jesus calls Mary Magdalene “my wife”. The mysterious manuscript, which King provocatively titled “The Gospel of Jesus’s Wife”, had the power to topple the Roman Catholic Church. It threatened not just the all-male priesthood, but centuries of sacred teachings on marriage, sex, and women’s leadership, much of it premised on the hallowed tradition of a celibate Jesus.

Story
The Gordon Riots marked a crucial turning point in the fight for Catholic emancipation. Over the next 50 years, factions battled to reform the laws of the land. Kings George III and George IV refused to address the “Catholic Question,” even when pressed by their prime ministers. But in 1829, through the dogged work of charismatic Irish lawyer Daniel O’Connell and the support of the great Duke of Wellington, the watershed Roman Catholic Relief Act finally passed, opening the door to the radical transformation of the Victorian age.

Yet it remains incomprehensible to a large number of people. "Reflections on History, Leadership, and Ethics: An Audible Journey with Pope Francis"
The book "Life: My Story Through History" by Pope Francis, as narrated for Audible, offers a profound journey through the personal and historical experiences of one of the world's most influential spiritual leaders. This review will delve into the audiobook's content, structure, and its implications on both a personal and global scale.
Firstly, the structure of the narrative is meticulously organized, reflecting a mind accustomed to strategic thought and organization. The Pope recounts his life from his early days in Buenos Aires through his ascent to the papacy, interweaving personal anecdotes with pivotal historical events of the 20th and 21st centuries. This dual narrative not only provides listeners with a deeply personal insight into his life but also serves as an educational timeline of significant global occurrences.
The narration of the book strikes a unique balance between humility and authority. His reflections on events like the Malvinas/Falklands War, the fall of the Berlin Wall, and the September 11 attacks are imbued with a reflective tone that invites listeners to ponder not just the events but their moral and ethical implications. This approach subtly encourages productivity in thought, urging listeners to see beyond the surface of history to the lessons it teaches us about humanity, governance, and personal ethics.
One of the most compelling aspects of this audiobook is how it subtly critiques and reflects on the Church's role in these historical moments. Pope Francis does not shy away from discussing controversial topics such as the Church's response to various crises, thereby setting an example of critical self-assessment which is essential for any institution or individual striving for growth and betterment.
The production quality of the Audible version enhances the listening experience. The voice acting captures the warmth and wisdom of Pope Francis, making the listener feel as if they are in a personal dialogue with him. This intimacy is crucial for understanding the nuances of his messages, which often deal with complex social issues like poverty, migration, and environmental stewardship.
From a productivity standpoint, the book serves as an excellent case study in leadership, resilience, and adaptability. Listeners can extract lessons on how to navigate personal and professional life with integrity, especially under the scrutiny of public life. The Pope's journey from a simple priest to the head of the Catholic Church is a testament to the power of humility, clear vision, and thoughtful action—qualities that resonate with those who value efficiency and impact in their professional endeavors.
However, the book could benefit from more explicit calls to action for its listeners, particularly those in leadership positions outside of religious contexts. While it provides a rich tapestry of lessons, translating these into actionable steps for diverse professions might enrich the experience further.
In conclusion, "Life: My Story Through History" by Pope Francis is not just a memoir but a masterclass in reflective leadership and ethical living. It's a compelling listen for anyone interested in history, spirituality, or leadership, offering insights that are both profound and practical. This audiobook challenges one to think critically about one's own life and the world around us, promoting a productivity of thought that is often undervalued in our fast-paced, result-driven society.

Inspiring.
Interesting insight into Pope Francis’ development as the leader of the Catholic Church.
I liked the narration by Stephen Colbert, but the narration of Pope Francis’ first person perspective was not as good. I would still recommend.
