About this listen
A story about young teenagers forced into war and the concept of luck.
Kalyah and the young soldier have met before in a more innocent time. They could have been sweethearts, but now they are facing life, death, and tough decisions.
This short audiobook is the first in a three part series.
Originally, the author conceived this story as a stand-alone short story following a particularly lucid dream she had after working on a website for an international non-profit agency whose work included protecting children in areas where child soldiers exist. She felt the story was powerful enough to share and liked the idea of releasing a bite-size audible story that could be read or listened to in its entirety on a commute or one sitting. After feedback from the first readers and listeners, Ferrigan realized that the story deserved a more complete narrative. It took several years to find the voice and time to complete the series. Now, the second part, A Change in the Wind has been released and the final part in the series, The Specific Heat of Water is in process, scheduled to also be released in September 2024.

Story
In a steel-and-lead-encased bunker 20 feet below the basement level of his house, a soldier waits for his final orders. On the surface, a plague ravages the planet, infecting over 90% of the populace. The bacterium burrows through the brain, destroying all signs of humanity and leaving behind little more than base, prehistoric instincts. The infected turn into hyper-aggressive predators, with an insatiable desire to kill and feed. Someday soon, the soldier will have to open the hatch to his bunker, and step out into this new wasteland, to complete his mission....

At the height of WWII, five idealistic young Americans receive a mysterious letter from the OSS, asking them if they are willing to fight for their country. The men and women from very different backgrounds - a Texan athlete with German roots, an upper-crust son of a French mother and a wealthy businessman, a dirt-poor Midwestern fly fisherman, an orphaned fashion designer, and a ravishingly beautiful female fencer - all answer the call of duty, but each for a secret reason of his or her own. They bond immediately, in a group code-named Dragonfly.

From the survivor of 10 Nazi concentration camps who went on to create the New England Holocaust Memorial, an inspiring memoir about finding strength in the face of despair. On August 14, 2017, two days after a white-supremacist activist rammed his car into a group of anti-Fascist protestors, killing one and injuring 19, the New England Holocaust Memorial was vandalized for the second time in as many months. At the base of one of its fifty-four-foot glass towers lay a pile of shards. For Steve Ross, the image called to mind Kristallnacht, the Night of Broken Glass.

VERY SHORT BUT VERY INTRIGUING STORY
Audiobook: Lightning in the Desert
The Specific Heat of Water, Book 1
This was indeed specific. For being such a short intro, this sounds like it's going to be a great series. It was finely detailed and atmospheric. I liked Kalyah instantly. I'm curious to see what follows. A great beginning for J Ferrigan.
The narration by Amy Wisenfeld was excellent. She had great voice inflections and in my opinion was the perfect reader for this story. Hopefully she will narrate the rest of the series. And hopefully part two will be longer.

Nine Lives
Even though this audiobook is only 18 minutes long, the story immediately drew me in. The story was well-written, with language that formed vivid images in my mind. The story flowed well, and it was intense and suspenseful.
I liked and immediately felt empathy for the main character, a young girl named Callie(?). After her family was murdered in a civil war, she narrowly avoided a similar fate. For the rest of the story, she is on the run, being pursued by a variety of child soldiers seeking to kill her. One of these soldiers is a boy she once went to school with-and had feelings for-who now wants to kill her.
The narrator was a woman with a British accent. She spoke clearly and her voice was appealing, but sometimes her voice didn’t always adequately convey the emotion of the circumstances in which the protagonist finds herself. Aside from those moments, the narrator did a good job.

Drew me right into the story...
Lightning in the Desert, The Specific Heat of Water, Book 1 by J Ferrigan was short, with a running time of eighteen minutes, but Ms. Ferrigan definitely made good use of those eighteen minutes! If I have one complaint, it's that I didn't want it to end and wished that it would have been longer!. This is book one of a three part short story. I'll definitely be waiting to listen to the other two parts, as I want to find out what happens. The story is fast paced and descriptive and really drew me in pretty much right from the beginning. With this being such a short listen, I'm not going to get into describing anything, as I don't want to give away the story. I'd definitely recommend it though!
Amy Wisenfeld did a great job with the narration of this short story. Her voice was pleasant and easy to listen to and the audio quality was great. I thought she had the perfect amount of emotion in her voice and I would happily listen to more stories narrated by her. One point of note is that the intro and the ending (as narrated by Ms. Wisenfeld) plays twice in a row for some reason. Simple, But Not As Simple :)
I liked this book because it is more than a simple love story. It is a life story with all twists, turns and obstacles that life throws at the young couple who are facing life and death situation. I recommend this story should be filmed. It will be interesting. Book is written very well so I connected with the character from the very beginning and rooted for them all thru the book.

Super powers, god(s), or just lucky?
I enjoyed this short story, but it ended too soon! I'll definitely need to buy the next parts as they come out.
It's hard to tell what genre this story is going to fit into. It could be historical fiction, modern fiction, science fiction, or possibly religious. It all depends on the reason she was able to survive. Until we find out more, it's fun to theorize!

Only part of a story
Lightning in the Desert tells the story of a young girl caught in a war torn nation. She is on the run, after her family is killed. She has several run ins with child soldiers whom are ordered to kill her.
The story is a heavy one, as it deal with war and loss, and child soldiers. It is well told, with a somewhat poetic or lyrical writing describing the settings.
It also doesn't tell a complete story. While it say it is 'first in a three-part series' it is more of the first act of a three act story. You don't get much here beyond the initial setup, location and character. I think once the three parts come together the story will be a really good one, but with only one part it is somewhat lacking.
The narration by Amy Wisenfeld is good, but it is also a very proper British accent, which doesn't fit well with the setting and story. There is minimal dialogue here, so not much beyond the main narration - so she doesn't do any characters or emotion in the voices. From a technical point of view Wisenhouse is good - clear, well paced, engaging, but I'm not sure she fits the story.
