Publisher's summary

Benedetta Carlessimo is no stranger to hardship. Ever since her mother died, the sixteen-year-old Italian girl has cared for her rambunctious younger siblings without complaint. Then World War II arrives on her doorstep, leaving her face-to-face with the most terrible evil she has ever witnessed.

With the Germans and Americans fighting furiously to control a strategic swath of Italy, Nazi forces seize Benedetta’s village, turning her home into a command center—and forcing her beloved father to choose between fleeing or fighting on the front lines.

In the midst of great deprivation, Benedetta struggles to feed both her family and the Nazis, all the while keeping her father’s whereabouts secret. Yet her blossoming love for a handsome young Italian man hiding in the mountains brings a sliver of joy to her life. But with the Americans advancing and the Germans growing increasingly desperate and cruel, Benedetta knows that one misstep could bring horrible repercussions…and only an extraordinary act of courage can save her family.

Bravo!!!

A wonderful and inspiring story! I'll never forget it. As an American of Italian descent and the daughter of a World War II American soldier, I was enthralled by the bravery of Benedetta and her determination to persevere through such perilous times.

Good story and narration. Somewhat predictable plot but a pleasant read. It's worth your time for a light and quick read.

SAD ITS OVER!

I'm 27 years old, and don't generally read (listen) to books..but this one was amazing, and full of suspense. I am so sad it's over :(

Another WW2 German atrocities book

Somewhat interesting book. I have read so many like it lately ? Do you think German atrocity books have anything to do with the current atrocities in American politics?
Donald Trump seems another Fascist.
We do not need anymore insane men in charge of our country or the road we travel may mimic this.
That said the book was a love story set amid German occupation of Italy. Characters were brave interesting people ( one of the Germans was even a good person )
The readers inflection and accent bothered me but I am not sure why. Found myself annoyed .
Fairly good book

War is Hell...

And being occupied by, and having to give up your own home and food to, enemy forces is all the more hellish. The story of what this family, and especially this young girl, endured during the German occupation of Italy during World War II shows at once the depravity of the human spirit by the oppressors, and the indomitability of that same spirit by the oppressed. It makes me ponder the millions of childhoods lost all over the world as 'casualties of war' when those so young are forced to grow up too quickly amid brutality and destruction and the constant threat of their own deaths. This story is beautifully written and performed and never sensationalizes or exploits the story being told. It is appropriate for mature young adult to adult readers. I would definitely recommend it. Happy Reading!

Great Story of Brave Girl in Italy During WWII

I love historical fiction, and this is the first one for me set in Italy during the second World War. Based on true events, when the Germans invaded Italy and took over the homes of ordinary Italian families, this story of Benedetta, a girl who is caring for her father and younger siblings following the death of her mother, is a tale of horror, devotion, bravery and love.

Decent story. Easy Listen.

I found this book to be a simple, light read. Story about family and young love. Not a deep or historical story.

Very Good

The performance needed better dramatic pauses. Otherwise everything was pretty solid. The story felt fairly short, but I enjoyed Bernadette's fire.
