About this listen

Earthy, magical, and utterly charming, this tale of family life in turn-of-the-century Mexico became a best-selling phenomenon with its winning blend of poignant romance and bittersweet wit.

The classic love story takes place on the De la Garza ranch, as the tyrannical owner, Mama Elena, chops onions at the kitchen table in her final days of pregnancy. While still in her mother's womb, her daughter to be weeps so violently she causes an early labor, and little Tita slips out amid the spices and fixings for noodle soup. This early encounter with food soon becomes a way of life, and Tita grows up to be a master chef. She shares special points of her favorite preparations with listeners throughout the story.

I don't often fly through books and even though this one isn't very long, I couldn't stop. This was also wonderfully read by Yareli.

Beautifully Weird and Magical

Such a moving story couldn’t have been narrated a better way.
This performance makes you feel like it’s actually being told by Esperanza’s daughter!

Laura Esquivel has not disappointed. Years ago I saw the movie and I couldn't wait to read the book. NOT DISAPPOINTED. My favorite is The Law of Love...as I am a romantic.

AWESOME

I first encountered this story through the film and was enchanted by it. The story is almost exactly like the film, but of course, with more insight. This is a quick story that caught my attention with its recipes, characters, and plot. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

The story is enchanting, but as I followed along with the book I realized it was abridged. That surprised me because it's a very short novel, and it wasn't clearly posted as an abridged recording. It doesn't take away too much from the story, especially because Arizmendi did such a lovely job reading it! I was really glad there was a version available where the reader had a Spanish accent. Despite the small missing passages, I would still buy it again.

Lovely abridged recording.
