About this listen

For a dog lover like Melanie Travis, the opportunity to attend the Kentuckiana Dog Show Cluster is not to be missed. Fortunately, the timing coincides with her spring break from teaching, so she heads for Central Kentucky with her sister-in-law and Aunt Peg, who's accepted a weeklong judging assignment. Once there, Aunt Peg reconnects with an old friend, Ellie Gates Wanamaker, a former standard poodle exhibitor and a member of a well-heeled Kentucky family. Miss Ellie has been out of the dog show world for more than a decade, but when Melanie invites her to spectate at the Louisville Kennel Club dog show, she's eager to accompany her.

Miss Ellie's presence at the expo center, however, provokes mixed reactions from exhibitors she hasn't seen in years, including some outright animosity. The following day Melanie learns that Miss Ellie has suffered a fatal accident while exercising her dogs. Aunt Peg, however, suspects foul play. Wishing to avoid any scandal, Miss Ellie's pedigreed family prefers to let sleeping dogs lie, but as Melanie begins to sniff around, she discovers Miss Ellie had many secrets, both in the dog show world and among her Kentucky kin....

Inexperienced New Narrator

I too enjoy the series; however, I am. Or a fan of the new narrator and won’t continue with the series. I would rather spend my money on narrators that can bring a story to life rather than sound the same from character to character.

Enjoyable story but bad narrator

I love the Melany Travis stories. I read many of them years ago and was delighted to find so many available on Audible. I started from the beginning again and I loved the narration - until this book. This narrator is, frankly, dreadful and I don’t criticize much! What a shame.

Need the old narrator back

I love this series and the narrator of the previous books was fantastic. I almost couldn't listen to this book, the narrator sounded like a first grader trying to read. Really disappointed that she's narrating the rest.

My Favorite of the Series

Having grown up in Kentucky, fascinated with the horse farms and racing, I absolutely loved this book. Can't get enough of this series. Very easy to listen to with spot on characters in the dogs show world as well as the thoroughbred world!

Not one of my faves

Really not a fan of this story, despite enjoying the books preceding it in this series. I also felt as if Aunt Peg had been kidnapped. She no longer sounds like an upscale grad of a very posh school in the northeast. Where are you Jessica?? The only parts of the new narrator I appreciate are the ever-so-slightly slower reading pace and less shrill voice of Melanie.

As for the story itself, the characters seemed to be in a cartoon world. I’ve never heard Kentuckians talk like they did in the book. I didn’t care for Ellie at all, though one does feel that her murder was not at all deserved. Just not one of my favorites in the cute little series. Hoping for improvement. Soon!!

I’m done with this series

Very disappointing the reader changed. Don’t know what happened but new reader has a robotic narration and the dramatic difference in characters from the last reader is too much. All the voices sound too similar and not as much flare and acting as the last reader throughout the beginning of the series until this book. Paid a credit for it to try it out and not worth another credit to continue.

Changed Narrator

So bummed. The new narrator simply cannot read the voices in an entertaining way. So, this is the last book in this series I will purchase.
