About this listen

Damien Mitchell awakens in a fantasy world, with no idea of how or why. It turns out he’s in a lifelike video game, which would be great! Except he’s a peon.

Seems the powers-that-be are messing with his destiny, and the best way to bring him down is to throw him into the quarry, where he’s to spend his days mining – at least until the mysterious race, the Seraphyt, comes along. And they've been waiting a long time to get their hands on him.

If Damien wants to discover his destiny, he’s got to overthrow and conquer the village Nythera with the only help he can get – other peons.

But as he delves deeper into this dark and dangerous world, he discovers that the stakes are higher than he ever imagined. Will he be able to claim his destiny, or will he be forever locked in Limbo?

Locked in Limbo is a LitRPG Haremlit Dark Fantasy with town builder gamelit elements.

This was a free listen with an AI generated audio recording.

I didn’t get drawn into the story as much as I usually do. One thing that I am willing to do is to pay to have talented people read my stories!

So the ai narrator wasn’t great

I think the story is pretty good but the narrator didn’t give much emotion because it is a machine and it is painful to listen to the the story when it’s spoken as if it where an essay or a lecture

intresting

it was pretty well written as far as litrpg goes. it almost reminds me of a city builder game for the phone or PC. the story is worth a listen, the sex isn't over dramatic, the fights are good. so far I like it.

there are moments where the narrator pauses, but that's probably the ai narration.

Great story

The story was great and the characters somewhat interesting, my only real complaints are that the virtual voice took so many extended pauses that I kept thinking the app closed or something.

again virtual voice ruins it

so first off virtual voice, you are getting a free voice actor and getting what you pay for. This one didn't sound bored at least. Miss pronunciations, wierd pauses, and fade outs at the begining and ending of sentences. The story was probably a decent read, and I I have a chance will probably get to it. There are a few places that should have been emotional, and either the writing or the reader just couldn't convey it.

An ok story marrred by Virtual Voice

This is not a bad book, per se. It lacks elegance and there are areas that could be improved but the real issue is not the narrative but the narrator, or the lack thereof specifically.
In the hopes that the powers-what-is at audible or the author is wondering what the specific issues are, I will elaborate.

Firstly, peon is an inelegant word and typically used as a derogatory term. Making that the default class in this lit-rpg was an odd choice. That the computer-generated voice mispronounces the word about 60% of the time, this is not optimal. The computer vacillates between pee-in and pee-on. There may be some formula that determines which and why the computer does this but, honestly, I’m not being paid to figure out the nuance of the system. Someone else can sort that out.

As a lit-rpg, there are some terms that are intuitively understood by a human that is not understood by a computer. Example: “XP 975/1000” would be understood by a human/gamer as 975 of 1,000. The computer reads it as a fraction, 975 one-thousandths.

There are some other odd pronunciation wavering and possible mispronunciations (coup-de-grass, not coup-de-gras) scattered throughout that demonstrate the audio was not proofed. At All. If so, nothing was done about the errors.

The virtual voice lacks any variation in character and as most of the story is told from one perspective, this is not terrible, but it also lacks any style. When it gets to the sultry bits, the flat and basic narration does nothing to bolster the scene. It winds up feeling like a virgin describing what they think it might be like instead of how it actually is. It feels the narrator is totally divorced from the moment and not a part of it.
The writing of the scenes themselves also feel a bit rushed. There’s no foreplay or romance building up to the moment. It makes the scenes feel like a rushed addition to reach an audience instead of something the author feels comfortable writing. Those scenes could have been removed and the story would not really suffer, which adds to the feeling that these were added after-the-fact instead of being a part of the intended narrative.

Overall, this was a mediocre lit-rpg, a poor ‘romance’ and the computer made this a terrible audio experience.
Virtual voice probably has good uses, this book was absolutely not one of them.
