About this listen

After over 20 years in the USMC and coming off a five-year tour as a contractor in Afghanistan, all Talon Clark wanted to do was spend time with his kids and wife on his ranch in Texas. Occasionally, taking a short-term contract job to pay the bills, Talon is marooned in Washington, DC, when the nation is attacked by a series of false flag operations against our infrastructure and is then devastated by a series of EMP attacks. With every major city burning and the nation’s electrical grid down, civil order has deteriorated to the point of no return, at least for the immediate future.

Separated by over 1,400 miles from his family, Talon sets out on foot to get home as fast as he can relying on his skills and experience. With only about a week’s worth of supplies in his get home bag, Talon must find supplies as quickly as he can and get out of the DC Metro area before the chaos overwhelms him. From his first steps, he finds out nothing is going to be easy or fast.

Very much enjoyed listening to this audiobook

Interesting lead character in Talon who's sharp, experienced, and funny. Liked the tire in to current issues and details; although sometimes too many specifics on the guns and ammo.

Fascinating Reality

When it started, I was wondering about my purchase, but then I found myself unable to stop listening. Relating the story to today's headline brought me into my own ability to survive such an event. Deeply thought provoking,

Great start

This was a great start to a series, we as Americans can never fathom an attack on our soil, and this book painted a realistic picture of how confusion, uncertainty and chaos sets in.

Really a great book

this book is as good as you can find in this genre. the only drawback is the narrator needs to brush up on his military terminology. He should use proper descriptions for military equipment and ammo. the basic miltary round is Five point five six, not five point fifty six. there were other terms he kept misusing, but you get the drift.

other than that, I believe the author has really done a great job in his preparation for this real world scenario and his descriptions of gear and tactics is spot on.

highly recommended!!!

Actually Believable (Mostly)

Using name-brand survival and camping equipment is both helpful product reviews and kinda fan-service to preppers. Unbelievable: the amount of weight and gear the group tries to pack. Believable: Using bikes and bike trailers? Elite. I liked the narration once I clued into the idea that Talon was like 60+ years old, but having triplets at that age is a survival saga in itself. I will certainly listen to the next book in the series.

This guy looooves Mountain House freeze-dried food. Spoiler alert.

1). This novel is a pitch for Mountain House survival food. Get yours today and be a badass prepper!

2). I’d like to criticize his overt infatuation with weapons, gear, and ammo. But I can’t because I love those things too. I think most of us, in that situation, would try to haul everything plus the kitchen sink as well.

3). I think he was going for a more human character, in place of a stony-faced God-like former super secret Special Forces Black Ops Sniper Assassin. Talon has a much more humble and self-deprecating attitude, but is still a boss when it comes time to let lead fly.

4). Mr. Wilson still has the slightly irritating habit of repeating things constantly, as in taking a paragraph to explain a three second action.

All in all, it’s sort of a SHTF meets spaghetti Western some novel. Taken in its context, it’s quite entertaining. I’d give it a solid 8/10.
