Critic reviews

"Ten African-American narrators read these ten interconnected stories, and their performances are uniformly excellent, bringing the cast of characters to vivid life.... Author Reynolds's vibrant language, delivered by the narrator ensemble with style, makes every situation and detail - whether funny, outlandish, sad, or tender - feel genuine, relatable, and full of heart. Reynolds reads the final chapter himself, a poetic conclusion that connects all of the threads in this perfect middle-grade novel." (AudioFile Magazine)

At first it seemed disjointed but as I read and listened it all came together as the students names and actions made it all stick together like glue. I think I laughed for about five to ten minutes straight when the kids were getting their friend all shiny with lotion and vapor rub up to ask a girl for her number. Too cute!

Great !

I truly enjoyed this, my 5 Jason Reynolds book! It was full of humor, shenanigans,& MG heart! Short stories are my jam and I love the way Reynolds linked the stories without being obvious to meet publishing standards. I loved the variety in voices on page & in narration. A Good time just wish I had more and some stories were way too short!

So CLEVER but I want more!

I appreciated the story arc for sure and can see why this has received such acclaim. The highlight for me was when Jason started narrating.

Those who have spent any amount of time around middle school students will enjoy and appreciate the unique qualities of each character and their overlapping threads throughout. The artful way each student is painted makes you feel connected to many if not all of these characters. Beautifully and authentically written. Highly recommend!

I really like how each chapter is a stand alone but connects to make a whole. As a middle school teacher I can use it to hook readers, or a a daily read aloud.

Fantastic!!
