First drink. First prank. First friend. First love. Last words.

Miles Halter is fascinated by famous last words - and tired of his safe life at home. He leaves for boarding school to seek what the dying poet François Rabelais called the “Great Perhaps”. Much awaits Miles at Culver Creek, including Alaska Young, who will pull Miles into her labyrinth and catapult him into the Great Perhaps.

Looking for Alaska brilliantly chronicles the indelible impact one life can have on another. A modern classic, this stunning debut marked number one best-selling author John Green’s arrival as a groundbreaking new voice in contemporary fiction.

Critic reviews

"What sets this novel apart is the brilliant, insightful, suffering but enduring voice of Miles Halter." (Chicago Tribune)

"A gem of modern literature." (Guardian)

"What sings and soars in this gorgeously told tale is Green’s mastery of language and the sweet, rough edges of Pudge’s voice." (Kirkus)

Fantastic coming of age book

Loved this book - made even better by reader Wil Wheaton. Classic coming-of-age story which resonates with me as I have a son the same age as the characters. Stumbled on this book by accident while looking for books read by Wil Wheaton - I'll be listening to other John Green stories.

Excellent Narration, Deeper Story than I Expected

I thought this would be a light teen drama, which it certainly has enough of that. But there is a much deeper message that eventually plays out. The narration is outstanding.

Another great book from John Green!

My only critique is that it was slightly predictable. But, overall a great read/listen! I strongly suggest it to everyone looking for a book that is thought provoking.

I’m glad this found me

Sometimes I let chance pick a book, Looking for Alaska is one of these. And I was grateful to chance by the end of the second chapter. It was a beautiful story. To me, it felt like I met a much better version of Holden Caulfield. He wasn’t pure mood and ego here. This was a rich story both light hearted and endearing. I would be friends with any of these characters, and I’ll think of them sometimes.
Will Wheaton was an excellent narrator. He always feels like the right choice to me. But particularly in this book, since I always pictured Geordie Lachance as being a better Caulfield too.

Better than expected

I don’t usually read fiction, so not sure why I chose this book. I liked it and think it’s a worthwhile choice for you to consider

Loved it

There's something very charming and warm about Wil Wheaton's narration voice that allows this book and really any book he narrates to be so inviting and relatable. The content of this story was great. It had me guessing where the plot would turn next, and the complexity and unpredictability of Alaska's character is what kept me reeled in. While I kind of guessed what the twist would be that would resolve the main conflict at the end of the book, I definitely did not see the second twist coming. Satisfying ending and great story.
