About this listen

This New York Times best-selling love story about two teens who find each other while standing on the edge is soon to be a Netflix film starring Elle Fanning and Justice Smith!

Theodore Finch is fascinated by death, and he constantly thinks of ways he might die. But each time, something good, no matter how small, stops him.

Violet Markey lives for the future, counting the days until graduation, when she can escape her Indiana town and her aching grief in the wake of her sister's recent death.

When Finch and Violet meet on the ledge of the bell tower at school, it's unclear who saves whom. And when they pair up on a project to discover the "natural wonders" of their state, both Finch and Violet make more important discoveries: It's only with Violet that Finch can be himself - a weird, funny, live-out-loud guy who's not such a freak after all. And it's only with Finch that Violet can forget to count away the days and start living them. But as Violet's world grows, Finch's begins to shrink.

Critic reviews

"Many teen novels touch on similar themes, but few do it so memorably." (Kirkus Reviews)

"In her YA debut, adult author Niven creates a romance so fresh and funny...The journey to, through, and past tragedy is romantic and heartbreaking, as characters and readers confront darkness, joy, and the possibilities - and limits - of love in the face of mental illness." (Publishers Weekly)

"The writing in this heartrending novel is fluid, despite the difficult topics... Finch in particular will linger in readers’ minds long after the last page is turned." (School Library Journal)

Incredible Story

This book takes you on a journey and I really don’t have the right words to express how emotional and right it all is.

There are books that just touch you in a way you can’t explain and this is one of those books for me. Because I remember being their age and having some of those very same thoughts. High school is for many, not the most fun experience and these characters really struggle. Maybe not always in the classroom or school setting.

But their struggle is real. My heart was in my throat for a good part of this book and I couldn’t wouldn’t put it down. I hope many more read it and the authors note at the end well stick a fork in me I am done.

The narration well Kirby is number 1 in my books man he delivers so, so, well. I can’t even with him just has a way about him and his voice is perfect. I really enjoyed Ariadne’s performance too I think this might have been a first for me.

just the loveliest, most heart breaking story.

This book had me laughing, had me dreaming. it's made me smile and daydream. it's brought me back to my youthful years in highschool and reminded me of my first teenage crush. this story is definitely going to be something you will like to listen to. Itcan be sweet, it can be tender. there's a lot of love in it. but ultimately it will definitely make you cry. So be prepared to feel the heart breaking pain of somebody who's lost their lover to a mental disease and suicide.

As hard as it is to listen to stories like this, I highly recommend listening to this audiobook. Of course there will be some cold scenes that will feel cruel to the heart. but this book is also very eye-opening to a very common cause of death.

Made me 'weepy'

As the parent of a daughter that ended her young life this book helped bring some buried feelings to the surface.
Ms Niven kept the story in the view point of Finch and Violet and did well to force me to look at things from another perspective.
Thank you Jennifer Niven, well done.

Mental Health should be talked about

Great story about love, loss, the need for community, and sadly, the way mental health is so often stigmatized.

Great

One of the best books I’ve ever read. Has a great mixture of romance, tragedy, and even some comedy.

The believability is the characters.

The positive counseling at the end helped to tie up the sadness I felt at the ending.

Whoa.

Without spoilers, I’ll say it’s worth the ride and it’s a trip that will touch many people and hopefully save even one. It’s hard but worth it. Hugs to anyone this resonates with.
