About this listen

Eight years ago, Henry Turner vanished without a trace - now, it’s up to a private detective and his unlikely partner to solve the mystery of a son gone missing.

When Mo Gold, a Jew with a conman for a father and a reckless gambler for a brother, teams up with black Holy Roller Arthur “Birdie” Birdwell, the two private investigators take on a disappearance case. As loose leads connect them to a notorious gangster via Mo’s indebted brother, the pair races to solve the mystery - and come to his rescue.

Set in 1960s Toronto, Looking for Henry Turner is an action-packed thriller that goes beyond murder, deceit, and gangs to explore the ties of family and the loyalty of friendship. As Mo and Birdie attempt to piece together evidence - while managing Mo’s acrimonious family relationships - will they find the missing son for a heartbroken, but still hopeful mother?

Good read. Very entertsing

Lieberman’s style, shamelessly in the Dashiel Hammet tradition, stands on its own in the accomplished writers tradition. Kudos!

There may be a tad too many characters to keep straight, but most of them are well-crafted, memorable and give the reader/listener much to keep on going. Gold and Birdie are delightfully original and we want more of them.

The plot has enough suspense and unpredictability to capture the imagination.

The main flaw is Patrick Condra’s struggle with pronunciation. Words like man-I-acle for instance. Are there no audio editors? It’s occasional, but happens enough with quite a few words that it’s a bit distracting. In general Condra’s perfect voice and style make the Hammett-esque exactly what it should be—a spitting image (or voice) of a the Spade type. It takes one back to the good old days. It’s a fun read/listen I highly recommend.
