About this listen

Meet Lord James Harrington and his wife, Beth. They adore hosting seasonal events in the village of Cavendish, running their country hotel, keeping the local folklore alive and listening to the latest murder mystery on the wireless. But mysteries don’t always remain on the airwaves....

James and Beth are looking forward to hosting a New Year's Eve ball, but first, they are accommodating the actors of a travelling Old West show and displaying American Indian artefacts as part of that tour. When someone attempts to break into the display cabinet, James' suspicions are aroused. And, when a member of the Old West Show is found dead, he finds himself in the middle of a baffling mystery.

I enjoy this series

This is a nice cozy mystery series. Clean and wholesome. This edition centered less around solving a mystery as compared to earlier editions and included in equal measure the changes that were occurring in Lord Harrington’s family. It created a nostalgia in me for how it would have been turning over a new decade; and how things & times are constantly changing. It also highlighted how it most have much been experiencing a society and culture transitioned from war times to the Industrial Age. I was uncertain at first but ended up liking how the author got a bit more personal into the lives of James and Beth. It makes me wonder and anticipate where the series will take us next. As always, I thoroughly enjoy David Thorpe’s performance.

Good plot idea but too much redundancy at times

When I first started reading the Lord and Lady Harrington series I wasn’t sure I liked it but I kept reading the next in the series and really started to like this little village and how the author kept adding new people to the village but using her plot story lines to do it. Now I know the history behind many of the characters and they have become very dear to me. In the beginning James and Beth’s marriage comes off a little too idyllic and unbelievable but the complicated relationships of others in the village helps to offset their seemly perfect marriage harmony which is rarely a reality even in the 1950s. I enjoyed this particular storyline but unfortunately the author becomes very redundant in her “clues” without adding a little extra or building them so the reader can make some deductions. It felt like the characters were saying the same thing over and over just rephrasing it differently each time. Overall though I still enjoyed following the characters and their journeys and hope to see if Florkiewicz will bring the Native American, Joe, back to the village for future episodes.

Love these stories but the readers voices and accents are atrocious!!

I almost have to fast forward through them. But the story is good and sweet.
