About this listen

1957. Lord James Harrington and his wife, Beth, run a country hotel in the village of Cavendish, deep in the heart of West Sussex. James and Beth are discussing the latest Cavendish Players production, The Devil Incarnate, when their cleaner informs them that farmer Alec Grimes is missing.

When James finds Grimes dead, he is certain of foul play. But the doctor says he died of natural causes, and even good friend Detective Chief Inspector George Lane dismisses his suspicions. So James decides to put his own sleuthing skills to the test....

Great reader, Great Story

Please more, because the characters are interesting and the plot was fun but smart. First class narration

Good Fun

The story was set in 1957 which was fun and exasperating at the same time as women had their place in the home. The details and feel for the time period were great and the narrator was superb! He is a master of voices. I enjoyed it and will probably try another book from this series

A Fun Read

I liked this book better than some of the other reviewers did. I found the characters engaging and the plot complex enough to hold my interest.

I think the reader complaints about food and music are overblown. The author is perhaps a little inelegant about them, mentioning the menu at a meal or the song playing as an apparent attempt to pin the story in a particular time period and perhaps to add texture. I have the sense that an editor sent the first draft back and said, "Add some details about the environment." It could be woven in much more smoothly, but it's brief mentions, not labored explanations of the meal.

The narrator is wonderful, and I thought it was a fun read and will be interested to read others in the series.

More less than more.

Plot is hidden among descriptions of clothing and dinner menus. A bit tedious to keep searching for the story.

Very fun!

Very fun book! The characters are enduring and the story flows. As far as the food references- You get hungry reading about the food and the author most be a very good cook - I want to try the recipe at the end of the book. The story does draw you in and I would love to visit this little community! The narrator is fantastic! 2 thumbs up and on to the next book in the series.

I'm Officially Hooked On Lord Harrington

Now that I'm totally attached to these characters you simply must add the other ones from this series to your list of offerings at Audible,... not fair getting me hooked without a follow up .

A 1950's era British cozy

This is a satisfying, well written, well plotted story, with lots of 1950's detail and a very excellent cast of well developed characters. I like the people of the village, and it will be comfortable listening to go back in another story and see what mischief some of them have gotten into. I was particularly impressed with the author's bio on her page in Audible. The most delightfully forthright description of her writing process. I feel like I know her and could hang out with her chatting.

Worth a listen

I almost didn’t purchase this based on other reviews, but glad I did. I liked the characters and the story was very good with me trying to figure out whodunit to the very end. Would listen to more in the series.
