Publisher's summary

After her mother’s death, Dottie Lester moves to her parent’s hometown of Saplingville, Georgia, with her alcoholic father. She wants to escape and go to live with her aunt in Macon, but first, she must get her father settled in his new job. When Dottie meets a handsome pilot and falls in love, her goal changes, but it is still no match for his desire to leave their small town behind and fly for a commercial airline.

Victor Douglas, United States Army Air Corps pilot, returns to Saplingville to help his ailing father. He has been flying his own JN-4 Jenny bi-plane for years. That and his army experience qualify him to apply for a job as a commercial airline pilot and win a coveted job offer, but how can he leave his father now, or a budding romance with the pretty new girl in town?

This historical romance will transport you

Story Impressions –

Love at Five Thousand Feet is set during a time where life moved at a slower pace. I love everything about this audiobook from the setting to the characters to the family drama to the romance. Love at Five Thousand Feet is one of those audiobooks you won’t be able to stop listening to. The descriptive narration is first-class and immersive. It’s historically accurate and well described. The narration and setting almost become another character. Every scene is described so as to plunge the reader into the story. If you’re like me and love heartfelt, realistic romance set in a bygone era, you’ll want to read Love at Five Thousand Feet.

Narrator’s overall voice –

Dawson McBride’s voice is full-bodied with depth and character. Whether he’s narrating in Dottie’s voice or Victor’s voice, he brings the characters thoughts and feelings to life. The timbre of Dawson’s voice makes for an incredible listening experience. Such a brilliant performance.

Does the narrator fit the characters?

Yes, Dawson McBride fits the characters perfectly. I closed my eyes while listening and imagined every scene with ease.

Narrator’s reading style –

The reading style is nice and slow with a smooth baritone voice. He pauses when the story needs it and picks up speed during some intense scenes. He innately knows how to pull the listener into the story. I could listen to this over and over and never be bored.

Narrator’s impact on reading experience –

It’s all about the partnership between Dawson McBride and Jane Lewis. Jane Lewis is a brilliant writer who writes with passion and Dawson brings that story to life through his performance.

Narrator’s pacing –

The pacing is perfect with just the right amount of dramatic flair.

Audiobook flow –

The flow of this audiobook is so impressive. As someone who has listened to her fair share of audiobooks, this audiobook listens like a professional theatre production.

What makes this audiobook unique –

This audiobook reminds me of everything I love about historical romantic fiction but in listening format. The story and the narration will transport you.

Would I recommend this audiobook –

YES! This is the best audiobooks I’ve heard this year. So wonderful.

Be still my heart...

The year is 1934 and Dottie Lester has moved to Saplingville, GA with her father after the death of her mother. Dottie is exhausted, working at the local five n dime, to support her alcoholic father. Her only support system is the landlady at the boarding house where Dottie and her father are staying. She’s considering leaving her father and moving to Macon with her aunt when she meets Victor Douglas.
Former military pilot, Victor, is biding his time helping in his father’s pharmacy until he can land his dream job with a commercial airline. Then he meets the lovely Dottie...
The pair begin to date and it appears that the relationship is taking off...will Victor choose the job or the girl?
There is the underlying theme of following God’s plan for your life that leaves you guessing Victor’s decision. The ending seemed a bit rushed but that did not take away from the story.
Looking forward to reading/listening to Frankie and Ruth Ann’s story.

Can she change his dream?

Victor Douglas has a plan to leave his home town. Dottie Lester just moved to Saplingville, Georgia with her father. Will he change his plans when he meets the woman he can't stop thinking about? Can she change his mind and get her father to change? When Victor and Dottie meet it'll be Love at Five Thousand Feet.

Victor is helping his father at the pharmacy, but is determined to do what he loves, fly. His dream job is to be a commercial pilots for the new Delta Airlines. His best friend is trying to change his mind and start an airport in Saplingville. Dottie Lester and her father are living in the local boarding house and she's hoping that her father will change his drunken ways. She's can't seem to get him to stop drinking. Dottie has started working at the five and dime store across the street from the Douglas pharmacy. Victor and Dottie have noticed each other and feel a pull to each other. He's trying to keep his distance because of his plans to leave in the near future. She's taking care of her father and embarrassed by his behavior. They meet and walk home together after work and getting to know each other. Victor wants to date Dottie until he leaves. They get to know each other and start talking and their emotions get stronger. Victor must deal with the expectations of his father wanting him to take over the business. His uncle gives him an alternative to his dream that goes along with his best friend's idea. He decides to take Dottie to meet his family. His sister Ruth Ann doesn't like her and makes that known and tries to sabotage their relationship. Everyone else likes Dottie. Victor takes Dottie on her first flight. A letter is sent and a response comes from the airline. Victor flies to Atlanta for an interview. Dottie's father is still drinking and she's had enough so decides to go stay with her aunt. Victor gets a job offer. He must decide what to do because of his feelings for Dottie. He steps in to help with her father's problem. He makes his feelings for what his sister has done clear. When his father has a heart attack and can't work Victor must take over running the pharmacy and finds out what his father's plans are. He works up his courage to talk to his father about his future and the future of the pharmacy. A new employee comes to work at the pharmacy and he lives at the boarding house. Victor and Dottie have broken up since he's going to Atlanta and she's going to her aunt's house. He gets jealous of the attention Dottie gets from the new pharmacist. Victor rethinks his dreams when he realizes he loves Dottie and he wants to stay around for his father's health. A talk with his best friend and uncle brings a new airport to Saplingville. Dottie has gone to her aunt's. Victor comes to see her and they fly back to Saplingville, to get married and start their family.

Jane Lewis's book Love at Five Thousand Feet is the second book in the Saplingville, Ga series but the prequel to The Barnstormer. You see Victor and Dottie' Douglas's story and the contentious relationship between Frank and Ruth Ann. Love at Five Thousand Feet is a story of dreams that change and how the right person to love makes the decision easy. Family is something you love and don't like sometimes. Emotions run high for these two characters who must find their way through their family trails to come together and love one another. I look forward to listening to the next book in the Saplingville, Georgia series. I'm hoping to hear the story of the youngest, Elizabeth Douglas.

High Flying Love

I really enjoyed listening to this book by Jane Lewis. The narrator, Dawson McBride has an easy storytelling style that makes this an enjoyable listen. His vocal style lends well to this historical love story set in the 1930s and he brought the characters to life. Ms. Lewis' characters are vivid and well-developed and the story well-paced. I had already read/listened to the second book in the series so I was already somewhat acquainted with Victor and Dottie.
Being a bit of a history junkie, I love this story set in the 1930s. The backdrop of the beginnings of aviation for use outside of the military is very interesting and Ms. Lewis has done her research. Victor returned from the air corp but his dream is to be a commercial pilot. However, his family comes first and he finds it hard to move on to his dream especially after he meets the new girl in town, Dottie Lester. While they are quickly drawn to each other there are roadblocks along the way.
Dottie lost her mother and to say her father didn't handle it well is an understatement, so in essences she becomes the parent to her father, Avery. Victor is the bright spot in her life, but his dream may get in the way of their future. I love the the characters in Saplingville and hope the author plans on more stories set in the small Georgia town.

Jane Lewis gives us a story to take us back to the five and dime, soda shops and crazy fly boys of the 1930s. This story will make you laugh and cry all at the same time.
