About this listen

Now an HBO® series from J.J. Abrams (executive producer of Westworld), Misha Green (creator of Underground), and Jordan Peele (director of Get Out and Us), this brilliant and imaginative novel by critically acclaimed author Matt Ruff makes visceral the terrors of Jim Crow America, melding historical fiction, pulp noir, and Lovecraftian horror.

Chicago, 1954. When his father Montrose goes missing, 22-year-old Army veteran Atticus Turner embarks on a road trip to New England to find him, accompanied by his Uncle George—publisher of The Safe Negro Travel Guide—and his childhood friend Letitia. On their journey to the manor of Mr. Braithwhite—heir to the estate that owned one of Atticus’s ancestors—they encounter both mundane terrors of white America and malevolent spirits that seem straight out of the weird tales George devours.

A chimerical blend of magic, power, hope, and freedom that stretches across time, touching diverse members of two black families, Lovecraft Country is a devastating kaleidoscopic portrait of racism—the terrifying specter that continues to haunt us today.

This has now become one of my favorite listens! Considering I have nearly 900 audiobooks, this is high praise! It definitely hits home hearing how bad it was during my grandparents’ lifetimes, however it made the book very real to me considering it involves magic.

Absolutely AmaIng!

Although I was initially introduced to the title when it came on HBO as a series, I loved hearing the original story as an audiobook and am so glad that I purchased it. I definitely recommend this novel!

Loved this!!!

I thought I like the show. I didn't like some of the poltical bs in the show. My friend told me to listen to the book. I'm glad I did. The book, like many books, is way better than the show. All of the characters had a lot of depth. I don't know why they didn't go tighter to the book than what we got in the show. If you like sci-fi conspiracy type books this is a great read.

Trigger warning. If you have problem with hearing the n-word this is not your book.

The story is beautifully narrated. The voice for the black characters are not stereotypical or phony. Mr. Ruff has a wonderful way with voice. And, the narrator delivered that voice extremely well. I have not doubts as to why this story was adapted for viewing. I loved the telling.

Excellent!!!

This is a really good book despite being very different than the series. It is rwally interesting to see the differences and similarities.

I loved how this book mixed history with sci-fi and fantasy. This was a great read. I finished the book within a few days.

Great story

I've now listened to this book nearly once a year since I got it 7 years ago. And I rarely re-listen to audiobooks. Here's my original review after my first listen though:

What a great blend of horror standards mixed with racial consciousness. The horror tropes are wide and varied: haunted houses, occultism, magic (albeit by another name), space tech, mysterious ancestry, and indescribable monsters. The racial parts know you don't need non-euclidean beasties to make it scary to read about a black man driving alone in the Jim Crow era. Also, since all the main characters are black, it's not just a well-meaning liberal author trying to shoehorn in some ancillary color into this predominantly white genre. This really is their story.

I've never heard of this narrator but I may have to start seeking him out. He was infinitely engaging and the voices each had their own personality.

Just what this genre needed

Notice the differences from the tv series vs the book. I wished the tv series had more episodes. It’s good to read the book then see the show.

But, the jump into 2 separate stories was a tad confusing. Had it not been for the show, to give me the visual guide of the story of Hipoletta and the son, the story would have lost me.

Loved it! BUT
