It's personal for the main character, Lyddie. It does deal with several topics that could be explosive, slavery, abolitionism, child labor, poor working conditions, and death but they are just part of the world the way Lyddie speaks of them and interacts with them.
This book isn't making any political statements, it's very coming of age. It's simple and engaging.
I had to read it for class, but I didn't mind
