Publisher's summary

Charlotte Parkhurst was raised in the mid-1800s and was expected to live her life without the freedoms she dreamed of. But Charlotte was smart and determined, and she figured out a way to live her life the way she wanted. She became an expert horse rider, a legendary stagecoach driver, and the first woman ever to vote—at a time when such things were outlawed for women.

Critic reviews

"[An] ebullient and tautly structured novel that moves along at a gallop." (Publishers Weekly)

"The author provides a compact and exciting story about real people who exemplify traits that readers admire. A concluding note tells more about the historical facts surrounding Parkhurst's life, but kids will read it just for the adventure." (School Library Journal)

Loved it!

I listened to this with my 9 and 10 year old daughters on a road trip and it was a great story. The girls really loved the history of it and it sparked some great conversations about how things "used to be." I would highly recommend this for a car ride with the family!

Really sweet historical biography

I loved as much as any young reader would. What a courageous character. What an important t story to share. Gives you a real feeling of what it was to be a woman in the mid 1800 just 200 years ago plus .

Such a sweet story! Based on a true story. Although a children’s story I really enjoyed it! Worth the listen regardless of your age or gender.

Absolutely loved the story & historical background

This is a story well worth listening to. The narrator is lovely and the historical background for the foundation of the story at the end is wonderful. I am so grateful I chose this quick listen. I love that I know this historic fact about the right for women to vote.

Captivating Story

This was such a captivating, yet melancholy, story of a young orphan girl who escapes her orphanage. It’s historical fiction— the author adds a historical note at the end of the story. The reader was excellent! She captured the genre of the book perfectly. My 9, 7, and 5 year old loved listening to this in the car with me!
