About this listen

Bull Run was the site of the first battle of the Civil War. This book creates an intimate tapestry of stories from blacks and whites, adults and children, leaders and families from the North and South. Broken dreams and bloodshed take you back to the front lines of the Battle of Bull Run, where common soldiers - not the heroes who grace the covers of history books and are synonymous with the glory of the war - risked their lives.©1993 by Paul Fleischman (P)1995 by Art Ruiz; 16 9; 1999 by Audio Bookshelf Fiction Geography & Cultures Military & Wars Civil War For Teens

Excellent reading

Having this on audio, and having our 6th grader read the book along with the audio playing made the book come to life, and the characters come to life. The book did a great job of showing many different perspectives.

Very entertaining with excellent voice acting.

I enjoyed how the story was told from several varied perspectives. it's funny, sad and sobering at the same time.

Interesting performance and background

This brief book is performed by a variety of voices, which I found to make the presentation interesting. The performance puts the story in context and presents the war in a realistic fashion. I found this informative and historically interesting.

Great book!

I wanted a book I could share with my fourth grade students in reading that could enhance their study of the Civil War. The story is engaging and I think they will gain a perspective that textbooks cannot offer.

Paul Fleischman is a genius storyteller

Newbery winner, just like his dad, Sid Fleischman (The Whipping Boy), Paul brings that crazy spectacle of a battle. The voice actors brought it alive in spectacular fashion. As a teacher, I came see this as valuable tool.
