Publisher's summary

Emma Bovary, daughter of an uneducated farmer and wife of a dull doctor in northern France, harbors a passion for everything beyond her grasp - sophistication, romance, love, and deliverance from her banal provincial life. Motivated by the primal, idealized, and vain, she seeks adventure. And with each new endeavor, Emma sets for herself an inevitable and inescapable trap.

Condemned as an affront to public morals, Madame Bovary’s obscenity trial made it notorious. Today, Emma stands as one of fiction’s most famous figures, and the novel itself, among the most pioneering and influential in world literature.

AmazonClassics brings you timeless works from the masters of storytelling. Ideal for anyone who wants to hear a great work for the first time or rediscover an old favorite, these new editions open the door to literature’s most unforgettable characters and beloved worlds.

A well written, descriptive, philosophical take.

Well worth the listen to this classic work. A stunning take about the downsides of romanticising our life's desires without appreciating what we have, set alongside the constraints of being a woman and having desires.

Madame Bovary's Tragic Life

I have wanted to read this novel or some time. First of all, I enjoyed the story, the language and the overall descriptions contemporary with the times. This novel reminded me of The Awakening because of Madame Bovary's lack of love for her husband and seeking prohibited love from other men. She eventually causes her and her family to become bankrupt due to her spending habits. She had done the spending without the knowledge of her husband. When she was unable to pay er debts she called upon her so-called friends and lovers to no avail. Feeling that she had no other options, she poisoned herself and died. The irony of the story is that the same husband that she did not love and schemed behind his back with other men, grieved himself to death because of his love for her. I recommend this book. It is a very interesting read and like prostitution, the tragedy of Madame Bovary still endures to this very day. WM SC

Masterpiece

It's classic on the level....well, God? You must read this book. Total masterpiece!!! I read it in conjunction with Zola's Germinal....Another masterpiece. Maybe I should have majored in French literature. I would enjoyed it even more as a teenager. Reading it in tandem with another masterpiece- Anna Karenina- would be cool. Everyone must read these masterpieces...as teenagers, right? Oh here is another book for teens- Wings of the Dove by Henry James (another masterpiece). Yes, I read it as a teenager. I loved every words of it- it transformed my life (together with Maugham's Theater and Tolstoy''s Resurrection).

Stay safe.
