About this listen

Madame Bovary is a lurid tale of unremorseful adultery and violent emotions set against the background of the stupefying, boring provincial town of Yonville in Normandy. The book is a biting criticism of entitlement and living beyond one's means.

Emma Bovary is beautiful and cultured but she yearns for excitement. Reading too many romantic novels has given her a taste for a lifestyle she can't afford, and she racks up eye-watering debts by secretly buying expensive trinkets from the unscrupulous merchant Lheureux. Unfulfilled by her dull-as-dishwater husband Charles and the drudgery of motherhood, she embarks on a series of torrid affairs with more exciting lovers.

How long can she hide her cheating and debts from her husband before her behavior catches up with her? Will she ever find something or someone that satisfies her craving for more?

Madame Bovary is both engaging and insightful while acting as a reminder that the grass isn’t always greener on the other side. The story of Emma, a self-centered romantic who longs for the glamorous life, is one that many women can relate to in today’s day and age. Once married, she still longs for adventure, glamour, and romance that have since died down, which ultimately leads her to a path of disaster.

The narrator was truly a pleasure to listen to. Kate Petrie was a wonderful choice for this books narration. She has a captivating voice that’s a delight to listen to, drawing you into Madam Bovary’s story right from the start, making it even more entertaining and thought provoking.

Madame Bovary is a good reminder to be content with what we have in life because things can always get worse. An excellent classic by Gustave Flaubert.

Calming voice with accurate French pronunciations. I highly recommend this version. It also syncs with one of the Kindle versions, which was helpful.

Excellent naration
