About this listen

A shy young man leaves his home in rural Turkey to learn a trade in 1920s Berlin. The city's crowded streets, thriving arts scene, passionate politics, and seedy cabarets provide the backdrop for a chance meeting with a woman, which will haunt him for the rest of his life.

Emotionally powerful, intensely atmospheric, and touchingly profound, Madonna in a Fur Coat is an unforgettable novel about new beginnings and the unfathomable nature of the human soul.

I need to go stare at a wall for 3 hours

A story within a story. Thoughts within thoughts. Feelings within feelings. Very glad I took a random person's recommendation and gave this a shot.

One of the best books I have ever read

I’ll just go off what Jack Edward’s says:

“you think you know YEARNING and then you read madonna in a fur coat!!!!!!!!!!! you think you know THE FLEETING NATURE OF HAPPINESS and then you read madonna in a fur coat!!!!!!!!!!! you think you know UNREQUITED LOVE and then you read madonna in a fur coat!!!!!!!!!!!”

Yep.
He’s right.

boring & weird

I struggled to finish this book but has to for book club. Dreadful characters without exception. Seemed like an interesting concept but incredibly boring in reality. Every major character was depressing, distasteful or both. Such a weird book.

Wow

This was an all timer right here. The monologues inside are soul touching and the exploration of friendship and romanticism is wow

What a gem!

Sabahattin Ali whom I described to my son as the “Hemingway of Turkey” once again took me back to days when I used to read classics. His prose is immaculate, yet the entire theme is actually quite modern. We read the book together along with my 14 year old and enjoyed it immensely. I just wish the other books of Ali would also be translated so we can read them all.

Kind of a Let Down

For a book entirely based in yearning, I primarily found myself yearning for it to end. Almost every build-up led to a disappointing and predictable conclusion. Overall, the book is well-written, but the story is entirely too drawn out and often redundant.

Unless you’re looking for something flowery and easy to tune out while you fall asleep, I’d recommend skipping this one.

Romance of the Age

This story seemed to be a modern take on an old love story. It really captured what it felt like to be in true love, and captured how deep it cuts you when it is all over.
