About this listen

Mercenary Kate Daniels and her mate, Curran, the Beast Lord, are struggling to solve a heartbreaking crisis. Unable to control their beasts, many of the Pack’s shape-shifting children fail to survive to adulthood. While there is a medicine that can help, the secret to its making is closely guarded by the European packs, and there’s little available in Atlanta. Kate can’t bear to watch innocents suffer, but the solution she and Curran have found threatens to be even more painful. The European shape-shifters who once outmaneuvered the Beast Lord have asked him to arbitrate a dispute - and they’ll pay him in medicine. With the young people’s survival and the Pack’s future at stake, Kate and Curran know they must accept the offer - but they have little doubt that they’re heading straight into a trap.…

"Not my first time reattaching a limb" - Aunt B

Relationships aren't perfect and this is true for Curran and Kate. They faced their first real stumble in this one. I appreciate the stumble in the relationship. It makes it more realistic. It seems to be written so that the reader dislikes Curran and sides with Kate. I felt that... but the scene where he starts breaking boulders was just too hilarious! 🤣 I could picture that tantrum so clearly. I've been that angry where I couldnt even talk. I usually find something to scrub/clean but breaking rocks might help too.

I hope we get to see more of the Hobbit in future books. Maybe he will come through in the final showdown with Roland.

One of the best ones in my opinion but I'm an action girl who loves the royal drama. From other reviews I can see I'm in the minority but I still loved it.

Why do they give away all of their secrets?
1. Kate tells Hugh about her mom's powers.
2. They give away the fact that they have a genuine shapeshifter in their group.

Narration by Renee Raudman is always excellent for this series.

Some good quotes from this one:

"We have established with him that he isnt dead" - Barabos

"Sit the F*** down!" - Hugh DeAmbry

""Crazy, yes. Dumb, no." - Kate Daniels

Love this Series!

If you could sum up Magic Rises in three words, what would they be?

What Is Next?!!!!?

What other book might you compare Magic Rises to and why?

I don't know what book I could compare this too, it's kind of on it's own from anything else I have read.

Have you listened to any of Renee Raudman’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No I have not, but I love her story telling ability, she captures me with every read of this series.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I cried when Aunt B died. I loved her character and the struggles Kate had with her. I will miss her, however, I liked that Mayhan finally took Kate's side.

Any additional comments?

I am patiently waiting for the next book. Now that I completed this book, I am going to re-listen through all the others all over again in order.

a roller coaster ride frombeginning to end

Magic Rises is a little different from the usual installment in the series. The setting is Europe. The action is focused largely on shape-shifter politics. It also develops the story arch of the series by introducing a couple of new characters that will no doubt be around in the future, wrecking havoc with several well established characters and moving along the kate-Curan relationship. It also develops the Hugh de Hombre character and Kate’s back story. If Hugh is on the scene in a big way, dear daddy (Roland) can't be far behind.

I have followed the series since the beginning and enjoy each new installment even more than the last. That pattern continues with this sixth installment. The story grabs you and takes you on a roller coaster ride from the first pages through to the end.

The narrator is excellent. She has been doing the narration for the series almost from the beginning and has honed the character voices well over the years. This installment showcases her craft and skill.

WOW!!!

Would you consider the audio edition of Magic Rises to be better than the print version?

The audio adds another level to the excellence of the book. Ms. Raudman does an wonderful job of portraying all of the characters and drawing the listener into the story.

What did you like best about this story?

Reading about Kate and Curran is always a pleasure. The book is exciting, funny, shocking and very hard to put down.

Have you listened to any of Renee Raudman’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have listened to all of her performances in this series, all are equally excellent. I first heard her in Me, Myself and Why? by MaryJanice Davidson, and although it sounds like a completely different person, it is still great. She has also done some of Suzanne Brockmann's Troubleshooter series, and they are great too.
Of the three series I have listened to her perform, the Kate Daniels series with its large cast of characters is the best example of the excellence of her work.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Absolutely

Any additional comments?

Kate is Fantastic...series gets better and better!

Would you listen to Magic Rises again? Why?

I have listened to the audio twice already and plan to enjoy it again. The series is well developed and the characters are wonderful.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Magic Rises?

B's stand at the gate.

Have you listened to any of Renee Raudman’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Renee IS audio for Ilona Andrews. Both the Kate Daniels books and the Edge books. The fans want Renee...she is just plain wonderful... no other word needed.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

"Hush, little baby, don't you cry..." This section just tore my heart out.

Any additional comments?

I just love these books and, of the series, this may be my favorite. This installment is a bit different, the problems are different...but a very interesting book. And we know that another ...or two...will follow. Yea!

Another Amazing Installment

As always, Ilona Andrews managed to seamlessly combine fast pace plotting, character development, pulse pounding action and a roller coaster of emotion from the first page till the last.

that was a great story

purchasing this series what's the best move I ever made, I was listening to Anita Blake, which was good at first, but after the ninth book it was like listening sex story out of a Penthouse Magazine, but Kate Daniels is a badass and doesn't rely on her hips to get a point across like Anita Blake

I love the Kate Daniels Series

I SO enjoy this series so much (and just about every book written by this couple). The voice actor is my favorite too! She is SO good!! The main character Kate is a magic wielding kick butt kind of gal, with a good heart. Curran is a mighty Alpha Lion that will do anything for Kate, or to protect her, and his pack. I can’t get enough of this series and I hope the voice actor stays with the series all the way threw as they continue to write books. I loved the battle scenes and how detailed these books are, as I never get bored. It’s exciting and fun. They write so well, I feel like I am Kate while listening, and the adventures keeps me engaged all the way through. Btw, thanks for the bonus section at the end of the book.
