This is the unauthorized, uncensored, and unbelievable true story behind the making of a pop culture phenomenon.

The original Star Trek series debuted in 1966 and has spawned five TV series spin-offs and a dozen feature films, with an upcoming one from Paramount arriving in 2016.

The Fifty-Year Mission is a no-holds-barred oral history of five decades of Star Trek, told by the people who were there. Hear from the hundreds of television and film executives, programmers, writers, creators, and cast as they unveil the oftentimes shocking story of Star Trek's ongoing 50-year mission - a mission that has spanned from the classic series to the animated show, the many attempts at a relaunch through the beloved feature films.

Make no mistake, this isn't just an audiobook for Star Trek fans. Here is a volume for all fans of pop culture and anyone interested in the nuts and bolts of a television touchstone.

What a terrific book! An ABSOLUTE MUST for Trek Fans.

Your interest in this book will correlate directly to your interest in the various TV series and movies. I particularly like Next Gen and Voyager and so I am EXTRA EXTRA EXTRA annoyed that volume 2 is not out yet!

This book lives up to its promise in the title of being complete and uncensored - I think it’s one of the best Behind the Scenes type books I have ever read.

Hurry up people! I want more!!! Get to work on the audio production of Volume 2!

wow

This was an amazing history with lots of detail. My only really complaint was that the narrators frequently mispronounced Trek names and places.

Fantastic history of the original series crew

It would have been useful for the readers to have actually watched Star Trek at some point. There were MANY mispronounciations of character names and other words unique to the series.

Performance problems

Overall I really enjoyed listening to the book. I had to get used to the constant switching between the content providers (the many people contributing their insights and comments about the topics) as the performers had to introduce the person they were quoting. If you are a Trek fan, there is a lot of great stuff embedded in the various perspectives, reflections, and reactions from the content providers (the actors, producers, writers, studio heads, and all those who worked on the series and movies). The only major complaint that I have is that the performers did not do sufficient research on how to pronounce the names of characters and actors. It was very annoying.

Very good behind the scenes content!!

A little hard to follow at first as the bulk of the book are quotes, but after a couple of hours you get the hang of it.

I was expecting a good time, but got much more that I bargained for. Great insights into the sausage making of the film business, and enjoyable tidbit after enjoyable tidbit of Trek trivia. Hanfield's reading shines as a particular strength of the audio book. Now I'm committed to part two, darn you all.

An unexpectedly fun...trek

This is the most well researched and presented book about Star Trek that has ever been created. it is loaded qith information, insights and juicy tidbits.
However I am not sure if ANY of the readers have seen any Star Trek Episode or Movie. They mispronounce names (real and fictional) all throughout the book and it really gets annoying.

A Good Book Read Incorrectly

Star Trek, even behind the scenes, never gets old. There were certainly many stories that have never been told.

Loved it.
