About this listen
Peter Robinson, the acclaimed author of the best-selling series Stephen King calls "the best now on the market", returns with a gripping, emotionally charged mystery in which the revered detective Alan Banks must find the truth about a murder with possible racial overtones - and save a friend from ruin.
In Eastvale, a young Middle Eastern boy is found dead, his body stuffed in a wheelbarrow on the East Side Estate. Detective Superintendent Banks and his team know they must tread carefully to solve this sensitive case. But tensions rise when they learn that the victim was stabbed somewhere else and dumped. Who is the boy, and where did he come from?
Then, in a decayed area of Eastvale scheduled for redevelopment, a heroin addict is found dead. Was this just another tragic overdose or something darker?
To prevent tensions from reaching a boiling point, Banks must find answers quickly. Yet just when he needs to be his sharpest, the seasoned detective finds himself distracted by a close friend’s increasingly precarious situation. He needs a break - and gets one when he finds a connection to a real estate developer that could be key to finding the truth.
With so many loose ends dangling, there is one thing Banks is sure of - solving the case may come at a terrible cost.

Story
Former London policeman Alan Banks relocated to Yorkshire seeking some small measure of peace. But depravity and violence are unfortunately not unique to large cities. His new venue, the quaint little village of Eastvale, seems to have more than its fair share of malefactors---among them a brazen Peeping Tom who hides in night's shadows spying on attractive, unsuspecting ladies as they prepare for bed.

Story
The story opens with the apparently accidental drowning of a sixth form student in the Norfolk countryside. As a matter of routine, or so it seems, the case passes across the desk of Detective Sergeant Smith, recently returned to work after an internal investigation into another case that has led to tensions between officers at Kings Lake police headquarters. As an ex-DCI, Smith could have retired by now, and it is clear that some of his superiors wish that he would do so.

Story
Seventeen years after the fall of the Third Reich, Max Weill has never forgotten the atrocities he saw as a prisoner at Auschwitz - nor the face of Dr. Otto Schramm, a camp doctor who worked with Mengele on appalling experiments and who sent Max’s family to the gas chambers. As the war came to a close, Schramm was one of the many high-ranking former-Nazi officers who managed to escape Germany for new lives in South America, where leaders like Argentina’s Juan Perón gave them safe harbor and new identities.

Chilling, Complex, Essential DCI Banks
Why I Liked the Plot: The author fears nothing, and moves his stories forward with his well established characters and interesting new ones. We don't live in a very nice world. In this book, the moral ambiguities and ironies go off like improvised explosive devices. Beware. Will Robinson's established fans like this book? I am one and I do. However, I feel many others will not, because this book lacks the escapist elements of some of the others in this series. As in some of the previous books, the author includes some graphic and gory scenes, as well as description of sexual violence. Current events and attitudes drive some of the dynamics. This book is NOT a "cosy." The writer has no hesitation in describing atrocities and autopsies. Narration: no one narrates better than Simon Prebble. He, as usual, is simply splendid. Summary: an engrossing, sometimes graphic, and heartbreaking contemporary crime and suspense novel, written superbly, but with disturbing from-the-news circumstances.

Didn’t appreciate the lectures. Please kill off Zelda
Regardless if I agree, disagree or am neutral on an issue, I don’t want to be lectured endlessly in my entertainment reading or viewing. The slant of the story was obvious. Leave it at that. The narrative and dialogue needn’t drone on with it. As for Zelda, she started off as a very sympathetic character. Now she is vigilante with no regard for the innocent lives in her wake. Even so far as rationalizing the death of someone she used for information as being the woman’s fault. I’d lay bet on what happens next and to whom. I just hope she goes too.

Awful
What an awful slog. I usually love Inspector Banks stories and anxiously awaited this one, but it’s really terrible. Disjointed story and unsympathetic characters in this one. I also didn’t like the political BS the author decided to integrate into the story. I hate it when authors ...and other proselytizing celebrities.... think we want to know their political liberal left biases. Ugh. Frankly, I am taking Peter Robinson off my favorite authors list.

Too much politics!
I found the political comments by Robinson to be offensive---to me and to all who voted for President Trump. There were a good many other reviewers who also pointed out the excessive politics.
I will not finish the book and probably will return it. I have read and enjoyed all the Inspector Banks books, but in the future, I will be careful about placing a PreOrder until I have read a sample and some reviews.
Simon Prebble,of course, is one of the best narrators ever. Sorry to miss him in the rest of this book.

I’ve read most all of the excellent Peter Robinson books and have to say this feels ghostwritten. Characters wander around often disconnected w the big story.

Awful
There are so many annoying aspects to this novel that listing them is a challenge: excessive descriptive detail, excessiive and boring musical references, simplistic plot, parroting of 'woke' themes, leftist moralizing, boorish pretense....and on and on. In conclusion, there is an effort to tempt the listener into buying the next story. Not me. I can't believe I hung in there and finished listening to this one!
