Publisher's summary

55 BC and Caesar's army gathers in the north of Gaul, preparing to drive away invading Germanic peoples and to traverse the dangerous northern ocean bringing punishment to the tribes of Britannia for their assistance of Gaulish rebels. But Fronto's troubles don't stop there.

As his burgeoning relationship with Lucilia steps to a new level, so do his responsibilities at home, a situation exacerbated by the disruptive influence of the villainous Clodius in the city, causing trouble and endangering those about whom Fronto cares most.

With two troublesome new centurions, a selection of worthless and argumentative senior officers and the suspicious deaths of a number of notables, Fronto's year is about to take a turn for the unexpected.

I'm obsessed with this series Love it

More battles and intrigue as we go to Brittan. But a revolt is brewing back home. This one is not up to the previous three. Or it maybe I need a break. Still love the characters and the battles, the detail. Fun Read nonetheless.

Real History? Who Cares It’s a Novel

Story has a credible time line and the Characters fit nicely. With all of the conclusions made around small fragments of questionable authors how much do we really know anyway. The real truth is that I enjoyed this book. I have read a great deal of “real history” which only made this book more fun. I have read (listened) to all of this series and I know I’ll listen again as I often do to historical fiction. So much fun. Got through Gibbons well almost and that will never be revisited. I do have one complaint if you’re outside you fall on the ground not the floor this happens several times and just bothers me. I hope I’m not making an error like readers complaining when authors refer to corn rather than grain that is a translation thing . . . grain, corn, maze read a book.

Most intriguing twist so far

Love the series. This one’s a little less on giant battles and more on the mystery going on behind the scenes and the decent within the legions. Slower paced, but you get to know the side characters more. This is in my top 5 in the books out of 15.

I character you can fall in love with

The writer creates characters that you can fall in love with. He has an excellent ability to fill in all the minute details of ancient life . The writer artful describes battles. And always keeps the plot moving.

Not the best book in the series

The author was inconsistent in how the main characters would speak, and interact with eachother. Also, too much disobedience, and disrespect by several characters to be believable.

A murder mystery in the Legions!

With comrades getting taken out left and right, Marcus scrambles to find the culprit(s). Can Caesar be trusted in this diabolical plot? A quick incursion into Britannia leads to strain on the General’s relationship. While losing old friends and making new ones, Marcus struggles to stay alive.
