About this listen

On a mysterious errand for the Pathfinder Society, Count Varian Jeggare and his hellspawn bodyguard, Radovan, journey to the distant land of Tian Xia, on the far side of the world. When disaster forces him to take shelter in a warrior monastery, "Brother" Jeggare finds himself competing with the disciples of Dragon Temple as he unravels a royal mystery. Meanwhile Radovan - trapped in the body of a devil and held hostage by the legendary Quivering Palm attack - must serve a twisted master by defeating the land's deadliest champions and learning the secret of slaying an immortal foe. Together with an unlikely army of beasts and spirits, the two companions must take the lead in an ancient conflict that will carry them through an exotic land, all the way to the Gates of Heaven and Hell and a final confrontation with the nefarious Master of Devils!

"Varian is my master, Radovan is my friend"

if you liked the last Gross book, you'll be happy with this one.

what you need to know is that a whole plot line of this book is devoted to Arnisant going on a sort of kung-fu-inspired solo adventure and it is kind of outrageously amazing. I mean, you might find it corny, since it is after-all from the perspective of a devoted dog who loves his master, but holy heck if arnisant and the kami don't fill your heart with joy then you probably need to spend more time getting in touch with your inner child, and less time, I dunno, making horcruxes and drinking unicorn blood or something.

Tied for my favorite

Great story. The dog gets a voice too! This book showcases Paul's Boehmer's true talent. I wish he recorded the last book.

Awesome

Seems to only make the original story better. I did not know how much I needed Armasan in my life. Great book, Glad to see some Tian Xia.

Listen/read in ORDER

This is a fantastic story and off-beat fantasy adventure. I've loved the characters since "Prince of Wolves," this story particularly needs the previous tales background. Give those a listen first!

Enjoyable to the last page.

These two really grow on you! I hope Mr. Gross won't stop coming up with new & wondrous mysteries for the Count to solve.

Big trouble in little Tian Xi

Varian and Radovan go to Pathfinder Asialand in their second adventure that sees the pair separated and forced to learn martial arts under very different and opposing circumstances. Paul Boehmer brings the two to life, as usual. I've heard him do the original Dragonlance trilogy, expertly giving voice to Raistlin and Caramon Majere, but it's Varian and Radovan that I'll remember him for.

Character jumps.

Jumped between the character's stories a bit, but was interesting how they made it work.

kung fu at its finest

this was such a great story. they really flesh out the characters and their growth as well as their gradual progression through getting stronger. the three converging plots in this book work together nicely and i do love how it all unfolds.

Good with switches of narration & 3 stories in 1.

Great narration of a good set of linked stories. Liked the dog's perspective as a nice twist.
