Publisher's summary

There is a lot of money to be made at small-stakes no-limit hold'em because...surprise, surprise...most of the players aren't very good.

However, few players understand exactly how to exploit these games. Competent players who generally play larger stakes will, of course, beat them. But they won't beat them for nearly as much as they ought to. Why? Because they don't understand how to adjust correctly.

Playing a solid, competent, decently aggressive style is a strategy that will be profitable. That said, you should not be content with just beating these games - you should be absolutely crushing them. The trick to doing this is to disregard a lot of “correct” poker and get way out of line at the right times. The methods required are far from obvious or intuitive but in Mastering Small Stakes No-Limit Hold'em Jonathan Little explains them in great detail.

Jonathan constructs a basic strategy to crush small-stakes games and also identifies the adjustments that need to be made when facing more competent opposition.

You need this book if....

  • You frequently play small-stakes no-limit hold'em
  • You usually play larger stakes but (especially live) often have to make do with smaller stakes games
  • You play tournaments (such as WSOP events) that feature numerous recreational players

Audible Reinforces Hard Copy - Fantastic Content

This book is very dense with information and strategies in lots of spots using range charts and different plays based on parts of that range. While charts can be downloaded, I first purchased the hard copy so that I had all the charts in one place. Johnathan does an excellent job reading through them and an excellent job narrating overall. The audible book is perfect for the car to reinforce the hard copy version.

If you are working to balance bluffs vs value hands and want insights as to how to play marginal hands vs. premium hands vs. semi-bluffs and what those range ratios should look like on each street, then this book is for you! There is also a lot of pre-flop direction and a lot strategy for handling a number of common spots (like what to do against limpers, a raise and a call, etc.).

Doesn’t work as an audiobook

The author is clearly extremely knowledgeable but this just doesn’t work as an audio book and there hasn’t been much done to adjust for the transition from printed to audio. As a result you’re going to sit through a lot of him naming card hands in a way that loses the meaning of the text.

Good Audio Book, Probably Better as Physical Book

I highly recommend this book because it has some really great, solid advice about playing poker. That being said, I would also order the physical copy (or e-book) of the book because listening to hand ranges and charts described is tough to follow. There is the option to go online and download the charts referenced but, since most people are listening to this audiobook while multi-tasking, it is not ideal to also have to review charts online. I think from a learning perspective, read the book and study the charts, then use this audiobook to polish up the concepts on the go.

Good study guide but not for the car

This is one of the most interesting books on ranges I have seen. The operative here is seen. Jonathan’s well narrated other books have kept me company on the commute. This one however defeated that forum as you must be able to see the charts for this to be effective. Good content but I switched to Kindle version from Audiable

Fantastic!!!

I love these audiobooks especially Poker books by Johnathan Little ;)
These books are absolutely, incredibly, AMAZING and AWESOME!!! Fantastic work I enjoy them and am learning a lot.

I would prefer ranges verbalized by pairs, then all of the suited hands, then the off suit hands, which is easier for the brain to process and imagine.

Johnathan what you do is tremendously helpful thank you for everything!!!

Overall informative and well organized

I liked that Jonathan Little did a good job speaking clearly and concisely. Filled with a lot of information and comes with over 200 accompanied PDFs. I listen in the car, so unfortunately can’t reference the PDFs, but listening through multiple times in order to retain as much information as possible. Can be somewhat vague at times, while other times overwhelming. Overall a good book that is probably recommend.

Great book

This is my first training book and simply put it took me from a losing player to a winning player. Great book for beginners who want to study and learn the game.

Great audiobook if you want to improve!

I’ve been reading Jonathan Little’s books for years and was looking for audiobook to listen to while at work with downtime. I was not disappointed. This book begins with the basics and even though I knew a lot of the beginning preflop strategies it was great to review them and pick up a few extra things I may have missed. I caught myself constantly pressing pause and taking notes to ensure I remember to implement these strategies in my game. This will be one I listen to over again and I will continue to purchase books from this great coach! Not to mention he does a great job on narrating it as well! Very satisfied with my purchase.
