Highest IQ in the Cardroom

Charles Darwin once wrote, "A mathematician is a blind man in a dark room looking for a black cat which isn’t there." That's an apt description of me when first listening to this audiobook.

Let's face it, few activities sound more boring than listening to a math book. I'm bad at math. I often struggle with basic arithmetic. But, I love poker and the culture of poker. I'm not a cutthroat player. I enjoy the ebb and flow of the drama inherent to the game. Like anyone, I prefer to win more money than I lose.

The audiobook is filled with brass tack facts. The style is personable. In that, the author seems genuinely interested in increasing the listeners skill level and success. I also own the Kindle version Poker Math: Expanded Edition. In addition, I've taken the Udemy course. There's a delivery medium for everyone's learning style.

I never thought I could learn, let alone understand this material. But, I have and I do. I apply it at the tables every day. Most importantly, I'm holding my own playing profitable micro-stakes poker. That's a pretty cool feeling for a late bloomer in the game.

Darwin continues, "Mathematics seems to endow one with something like a new sense." That's exactly how you'll feel after applying the principles in this audiobook.

Great introduction to learning poker math

I absolutely loved this book. The author did an incredible job of breaking down complex mathematical concepts and making them easy to understand, even for someone like me who doesn't have a strong math background.

One thing I appreciated about this book was how it was written in a very approachable and engaging style. The author used real-life examples and anecdotes to illustrate the importance of math in poker, and I found myself completely absorbed in the book from start to finish.

But what really sets this book apart is the way it empowers readers to use math to make better decisions at the poker table. By explaining how to calculate odds, estimate ranges, and use other mathematical tools, the book gives readers a valuable set of skills that they can immediately put to use in their own poker games.

Overall, I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in improving their poker skills. Whether you're a seasoned pro or a complete beginner, this book will help you understand the math behind the game and give you the tools you need to make better decisions and win more often.

Awesome poker book

Alton has done a great job explaining the mathematics behind no-limit holdem.

The book is clearly written and right to the point on many different poker mathematical concepts: equity, pot odds, implied odds, and combinatorics. There are many examples to solidify your understanding of the concepts. Even though this was an audio book I never felt lost working through the examples.

The book also dives into the math for pre-flop and post flop play. The set mining ideas are great and I know that it will really pay dividends in my game.

This book is a must for anyone looking to understand poker math, maximize their profits and minimize their losses.

Great poker book - must read!

I actually bought this book a while back, but I have been too busy to read it. I was very excited to see the Audible version come out. If you're a busy person like me and don't have a lot of time to read a book, this is the perfect way to gain the essential poker math knowledge from this amazing book. It's a must read for any poker player, so if you don't have time to read, you need to get this audio version asap! You can listen to it very easily in so many situations such as when driving in your car, working around the house, getting ready for bed, etc.

And if you do have a chance, it's much easier to take notes while listening to the book instead of reading the actual book. Having said that, there are practice hands at the end of the chapters as well as some reference materials at the end of the book, so you can just go back through those instead of taking your own notes if you prefer.

I have played poker for many years, and as the book states, the game has evolved. The math has definitely changed, and this book does an outstanding job explaining how it all works now. These concepts are critical, so all poker players must read this book. If you don't have time, you must get the audio book because you will learn these critical concepts while doing other things, and the payoff is immediate (during your next poker game).

I really liked how each chapter touched on topics, later chapters explained each in detail, and then it was all put together showing the big picture. This allows the reader to ease in to each topic, learn the basics, and they when it's all brought togehter, it is very easy and smooth. These are the critical concepts you must learn today:

Pot odds
Implied odds
Equity
Expected Value
Rule of 2 and 4

I've read about and used some of these in the past, but this book makes all calculations so much easier and faster to do. And a lot of older books focus on limit games, and these concepts do not work the same as they do in no limit. I love the practice hands - they are so much better than example hands from other books. All other poker math books I have read get too complicated, and it makes me not want to read them. This one makes everything so simple, easy to understand, and easy to use.

I could go on and on. The bottom line is that you need this book, it is worth every penny, and you will quickly become a better poker player with long-term profitabiliity when you invest in this book. I've read other books by this authoer, and they are all very solid and worth the price. And with this book, you get a free enrollment in his Essential Poker Math course at MicroGrinder Poker School. Good book.

I was familiar with most of the topics, but this did a great job explaining the math and using real world examples that you can use while playing.
