Publisher's summary
The Lux Radio Theatre was one of radio's most popular series, attracting Hollywood's top stars and boasting a lavish budget. It began in 1934 by featuring dramas from Broadway, but there was not enough material to support the show. In an attempt to reverse the slipping ratings, the show was moved to Hollywood in 1936, where there was plenty of material and talent. In fact, filmmaker Cecil B. DeMille often served as the host.

Told from four-year-old Laura's point of view, this story begins in 1871 in a little log cabin on the edge of the Big Woods of Wisconsin. Laura lives in the little house with her pa, her ma, her sisters Mary and Carrie, and their trusty dog, Jack. Pioneer life is sometimes hard for the family, since they must grow or catch all their own food as they get ready for the cold winter. But it is also exciting as Laura and her family celebrate Christmas with homemade toys and treats, do the spring planting, bring in the harvest, and make their first trip into town.

Story
The modern audience hasn't had a chance to truly appreciate the unknowing dread that readers would have felt when reading Bram Stoker's original 1897 manuscript. Most modern productions employ campiness or sound effects to try to bring back that gothic tension, but we've tried something different. By returning to Stoker's original storytelling structure - a series of letters and journal entries voiced by Jonathan Harker, Dr. Van Helsing, and other characters - with an all-star cast of narrators, we've sought to recapture its originally intended horror and power.

Narrator Dan Stevens ( Downton Abbey) presents an uncanny performance of Mary Shelley's timeless gothic novel, an epic battle between man and monster at its greatest literary pitch. In trying to create life, the young student Victor Frankenstein unleashes forces beyond his control, setting into motion a long and tragic chain of events that brings Victor to the very brink of madness. How he tries to destroy his creation, as it destroys everything Victor loves, is a powerful story of love, friendship, scientific hubris, and horror.

Great musical
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes - it was so enjoyable and wonderful to hear Judy Garland singing. It was a delightful presentation with full sound effects.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Esther and Tootie as they played their characters so well. Especially Tootie as the younger sister and the antics she got up to.
What about Judy Garland and Margaret O'Brien ’s performance did you like?
When Esther was comforting Tootie when they thought they were moving to New York. They were so believable.
Any additional comments?
I even enjoyed the ads as they were something new to me even though we have Lux Flakes in Aust I was unaware there had been a shortage during this period. The information about the returning Service Personnel from WW2 was also interesting. I love these little snippets of information. I am now looking forward to listening to more of these productions.
Something went wrong. Please try again in a few minutes.

Short and sweet
Well played. Very typical 40s 50s mild mannered story. good ads. These are classics. Worth listening to. made me laugh. Brought back memories.

👏 Classic 📻 Dramatization
I liked hearing this radio dramatization as compared to the movie.
There were a few stumbling of acting lines, but I enjoyed that too! Even the commercials and actor comments after the show were entertaining.
There were some acting scenes that I felt could have been a little better, so as to make the scenes a little more lively.
Overall I greatly enjoyed the radio experience!

They don’t make it like they used to
You definitely don’t make these like they used to radio broadcast scenes or something very special from Hollywood with the regional cast of the movies for telling the story. It’s nice just to sit back and relax and enjoy the Audible versions I’m old Time radio.
