About this listen

New York Times best-selling author Jodi Picoult has an incredible talent for taking hot-button social issues and weaving them into compelling page-turners. In Mercy, she explores the depths of love in its many forms. Police chief Cameron McDonald has lived in idyllic Wheelock, Massachusetts for most of his life, as has his beloved wife Allie. Their comfortable lives are thrown into tumult, however, when Cam's distant cousin Jamie arrives in town along with his wife's dead body. Jamie admits to the murder - a mercy killing to end the pain caused by a ravaging cancer. And now Cam is torn by his oath to uphold justice and his family obligations as chief of the Scottish McDonald clan. Meanwhile, another new arrival in town, Mia Townsend, threatens to unwittingly drive a dagger through Cam's marriage. Deftly portraying the complexities of love and passion, Picoult delivers another literary triumph with Mercy.©1996 Jodi Picoult (P)2006 Recorded Books,LLC Contemporary Contemporary Romance Mystery Romance Suspense Thriller & Suspense Women's Fiction Marriage Fiction

Critic reviews

"What could have been a competent, topical novel about a mercy killing becomes, in Picoult's hands, an inspired meditation on love." ( Publishers Weekly)

Good Book

It really makes you think. I wasn't overly impressed with the affair and how he thought of his wife, but other than that the entire book was very well written.

Loooong

This was not one of Jodi’s best books. Too long and boring at times I had to force myself to finish reading it.

Mercy

This was a great book. Jodi Picoult always delivers a story that makes you think about what you might do if you had been in that situation

Disappointing

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Yes. I really enjoy Jodi's writing style.

What could Jodi Picoult have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Too many characters to keep up with and well into Chapter 10-11 before the subplots began to make sense.

Which scene was your favorite?

Allie's garage sale and the trial.

Could you see Mercy being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

No, not really.

Any additional comments?

As a Jodi Picoult fan...this, in my opinion, was not her best work. First of her books that I was not completely thrilled with. 😔

Frustrating

I do not know what to think about this story. It made me so mad on so many levels. I hated Cam and how he treated Allie, I hated how Allie was so blind to what Cam was doing. Their lack of communication was infuriating. They barely knew each other. The Mia storyline was weird how she just appeared, started working for Allie, then just fell in love with Cam was off putting. The ending was super disappointing. I’m glad in the end Jamie was set free. And why did Cam pay for Jamie’s lawyer? Where did that come in. I was really hoping for more reconciliation with Cam and Allie. The narrator did a good job so there’s that. I really dislike women who think it’s ok to make a move on married men. Mia knew what she was doing. I would have hunted her down and made her life hell. This was not my favorite.

Pretty Good!

Would you consider the audio edition of Mercy to be better than the print version?

They celebrated Valentine's Day two days earlier, January 12th. Hmmmmm. Typo or read incorrectly? Big mistake somewhere. I haven't seen the printed version and I wonder what it says.

What other book might you compare Mercy to and why?

I can't compare because this book is written differently than the rest of her books. It's interesting how she combines her story with letters written.

What about Alyssa Bresnahan’s performance did you like?

She does a very good job.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Valentine's day in January?

Any additional comments?

Maybe later
