About this listen

The female Nero Wolfe!

Message from a Corpse is a masterpiece from the pen of Golden Age mystery novelist Sam Merwin, Jr.

When writer Breck Barnum finds himself framed for murder, he soon realizes the slaying is connected to the autobiography of a world famous financier he had ghosted. But the unfinished manuscript has disappeared, and Breck thinks he has problems when he discovers a pair of murderous goons and three beautiful women are also searching for it. Then he meets Amy Brewster and discovers his problems are only beginning. She's the only one who can save him - if she doesn't drive him crazy first! Never mess with a friend of Amy's. Crimedom is about to discover the real meaning of terror, for Tommy guns and automatics are no match for Amy. And soon the 50ish millionaire detective finds she's the next target on the killer's list.

more greed

So many players you'll need a score card to keep track. I enjoyed every blasted minute of it. Amy, the lawyer is one of a kind. I had no idea what was what until it was explained at the end, and I had to listen to the last chapter twice to get it right. I voluntarily listened to a free copy of this and am giving an honest review. The narrator did a good job bringing it to life.

Noir Female Detective strikes again!

If you are a fan of old style film noir detective tales, you will enjoy this book. Amy Brewster is a female attorney with huge appetites and the size to match. She is also becoming known as a crime solver and once again, Amy saves the day! Picture a female Nero Wolfe and you have a pretty good idea of Amy. She loves her cigars, gin and food!

Breck Barnum is a writer who becomes involved in a series of murders. Along the way, he meets a beautiful young woman (or two), a few gangsters, and a dapper but hard-nosed detective. The dialogue is great fun and very typical of the era in which the book is written. If it was written today, the reader would be rolling their eyes in disbelief. But, since that was the style of the 1940's Detective tales, it is great fun.

The narrator does a great job with the various voices for the different characters and her pacing is perfect. My only complaint is the mispronunciation of a lot of words. I found this tendency to be very distracting.

I was given the chance to listen to this audiobook by the Publisher and chose to review it.

A great Noir mystery

I enjoyed listening to Sam Merwin Jr.’s Message from a Corpse. The story was a great Golden Age mystery in the genre that I live. This book is one in the Amy Brewster series (the “female Nero Wolfe). The narration by Jade O’Kelley was wonderful. The characters came to life!
