About this listen

In this gripping novel of small-town scandal and sizzling passion, New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts tells the story of a renowned artist who confronts a mystery from her past—and finds that her family secrets have not been laid to rest.

Famed sculptor Clare Kimball has commanded the attention of the New York art world, but troubling memories from childhood have drawn her home to Maryland, to the town where she grew up and where her father died so long ago in circumstances never really explained. Nothing much has changed in Emmitsboro—except Cameron Rafferty, the onetime high school bad boy turned town sheriff. The only hint of Cam’s wild nature is the light in his eyes when he looks at Clare. In Cam’s strong arms Clare is seduced into falling in love—and believing that her small-town world is safe.

But within the dark woods of Emmitsboro, something evil is spreading its poisonous power. Now Clare must pay the price for digging up the secrets of the past . . . and confront an evil that may be unstoppable—because those who practice it believe it is divine.

Creeped me out

Must say I haven't finished this one yet & don't know that I will. The sacrifices/rapes/murders creep me out. I may finish it later but for now I'm on to Whiskey Beach. Narrator does a good job though.

Not my kind of story.

I love Nora. I love her writing. I'm sure this book is no different. I just don't get into those stories.

Well Written Dramatic Thriller Romance

For those of you who love romance mixed in with drama, terror, and suspense, you will absolutely love listening to this book. It has all that and more. I loved being able to do my housework as I submerged myself into the characters and storyline Nora Roberts developed so creatively and skillfully.

I've listened to this novel twice since I realized that I had missed some of the nuances Nora Roberts intertwined within the story the first time I listened to it. As in all great romances, the romance survives unscathed at the end. However, as in all good suspenses, there is a gotcha at the end. In fact, there were two gotchas, one that saddened me and another that chilled me.

PERFORMANCE: Kimberly Farr does a wonderful job reading this story; however, there are a few RARE spots in the story where it is apparent she stopped and began again, accidentally cutting off some of her words. While momentarily aggravating, it only takes away a few words from the story. For this reason alone, I am rating her performance four (4) stars rather than five (5) stars since I believe it to be her responsibility to see that this does not occur. If I am wrong, I hope someone will correct me.

Hard to put down

I have always been a Nora Roberts fan, she's a fantastic author and once again she did not fail to entertain me. In fact, I was disappointed it was over!
Some of the characters were a bit flimsy, a little too stero-typical. Also, of the "bad" guys, some were quite easy to just pinpoint from the beginning but others were a total shock. Loved it all and can't wait to get more by Nora Roberts.
The narrator did an excellent job, very believable and easy to distinguish between the various characters.
PS, enjoyed the narrator so much I'm looking at other books she reads just because she read them.

Wow!

This is a very different style for Ms. Roberts but I have to admit I kinda loved it. I've loved both her romantic side and law /romance side forever. Lately I've just not been connecting with the fawning girl/hero guy theme. As much as I love me some hot guy/girl romance I've been needing something different. This one hit it on the head for me. The romance was more subtle in this and the intensity of mystery ramped up. I was enthralled. On the edge of my seat. It was dark and twisty.

Too dark for me.

The storyline seemed to be good, however all that satanic chanting was wayyyyy too much for me. I get that it’s part of the plot but it was disconcerting. Also the narration during the male dialect wasn’t the greatest.
