About this listen

An arranged marriage, a choice to love, and the hope for happily ever after. This is a sweet and clean regency romance.

Rebecca Devon lives under the severe eye of her aunt and the iron will of her father. Though she wears what she is told and befriends the people they choose for her, she spends every moment longing to do as she wishes. Knowing freedom will only come through marriage, her hopes for a happy union are stolen away when her father arranges her marriage to a complete stranger.

Christian Hundley, Lord Easton, has learned the hard way that English society won't accept a person who looks or behaves differently than their ideal. He has hidden himself away from scornful eyes for years until his aging grandfather takes matters in hand and finds Christian a bride. Knowing he must agree to the marriage, Christian shields his heart. If the whole of society cannot accept him, why should his bride?

Rebecca knows she must have love in her life, but Christian is convinced there is nothing so fraught with danger and pain as entrusting one’s heart to another. Rebecca does everything she can to change his mind, but Christian is determined to remain aloof.

Can an arranged marriage ever be anything other than a business partnership?

This is the first book I’ve encountered in this series. It is a stand alone and I didn’t feel like I missed anything. It was a very cute regency era clean love story. I highly recommend.

So many characters to love, to root for, and a few to really dislike. The ups and downs between the characters, their needs and goals, and the interplay of their relationships are great! Now I'm not sure which of this series is my favorite of this series so far because I like this one so much! The ending couldn't have been any more satisfying or delightful because it was wonderful!

A wonderful ride!

Story: (5 stars)

Miss Devon makes a decision and follows through. Her stubbornness to her cause finally wins over her betrothed who then protects her from all the horrid members of her family whilst bringing the loving members of her family into her inner circle.

I liked how the angst in this story vacillated between the two characters in a very believable way as they came to know one another better and fall in love.

I did feel that the grandfather should have been dealt with in a more detailed manner. He was a horrid old man and, in the beginning, Christian bowed to his every demand. As a reader, I wanted to see Christian and Rebecca stand up to him as they did to her controlling relatives.

A well-written story and, even though this is book 5, I was able to easily follow the characters who must have been the heroines in some of the other books.

Narrator: (4.5 stars)
Very good narrator! She had a variety of British accents at her disposal and read at a good pace with expression. Many of her characters had an inherent laugh in their voices and I always love it when a character’s cheerfulness comes through the voice of the narrator. (Her Italian accent seemed a bit forced, the word, “carina” sounding especially British in pronunciation.)

Works well as a stand-alone

What a wonderful audiobook. I thoroughly enjoyed this listen. I thought with the first declaration from Christian there would be a much different outcome. I loved how he became her protector. Would highly recommend.

This story quickly drew me in. I loved that Miss Devin chose to love and in doing so received love. Not only was this a wonderful story but also a lesson for us all.

A must read!

Great narration, Rebecca has a backbone, but has been controlled by her Aunt and Father for two years. With the help of her family and friends, she gets to come into her own, with a satisfying ending!

Fun and fiesty

I enjoyed it (mostly) but parts are still a bit over the top.

I give it 4 stars because:
- I did not like how the narrator was pronouncing the sentences in Italian (overly dramatic in my opinion).
- The story has the same issue as almost all Ms. Britton’s novels - at certain point characters start acting irrationally for no other reason then to build some artificial tension arround it (I do not like drama, and prefer when characters remain sensible).

Other then that, it was a sweet book and a nice passtime.

Nice and sweet as all her novels

Such a sweet and thoughtful story. The characters were all such products of their upbringing that the slower plot made sense, but was sometimes a bit too slow. Still a very enjoyable story, and loved the characters.

Enjoyable story, sweet characters

In an era where marriage was about station property and little to due with the heart, Sally Britton captures the era very well. The narrator Kim Bretton has a unique voice who did well with this story.
