About this listen

Grace Sinclair has been callously cast out of her home. And though taken in as an orphaned child by the vicar and his wife, her unsurpassed beauty makes it impossible for her to remain in the vicar’s household - with two daughters of their own about to enter Society, the vicar and his wife see Grace as nothing but competition. Thankfully, Grace’s estranged Aunt Bell has agreed to take her in to her home in London. But Grace soon learns her situation has just gotten much worse.

It takes only a moment’s acquaintance for Grace to ascertain that her aunt has married a detestable rake. And Aunt Bell, recognizing the danger of having her lovely niece too near her husband, gives Grace an ultimatum: The young woman has two weeks to find a man to marry, after which she will be turned out. With no experience in the art of attracting a husband, Grace quickly realizes that a worthy suitor might not be so easy to ensnare.

This story made me laugh so much! Well written and I would recommend to anyone. I docked one star because towards to end there were some clicking sounds that distracted from the story.

Fun story

I enjoyed this book however and went at a slower pace than I would prefer but overall it was a good book.

Strong female lead

I listened to this on audible. The narrator was great! I felt like the first few chapters took me some time to get into. But once Grace was deep into trouble, the interest picked up. The second half of the book, once Nathaniel was more involved and trying to resist Grace (and failing), the interest was high and I couldn’t get enough!

Slow start, but great ending!

I wasn’t sure if I was going to finish this book at first. The narrator is American, however after the first 2 chapters it didn’t really bother me so much anymore as I became engrossed in the characters and the story. It was a little bit too long and I felt it dragged towards the end and I was becoming a little bored especially when they were going through a rough patch. There was not enough passion for me but otherwise a sweet lovely story.

A sweet story

Plot shallow and very drawn out over so many hours - thought it would never get to the conclusion

Characters shallow and plot even less interesting

This story is probably a good one, but the narrator is not a good match. I would've preferred either the whole story in an American accent or have a narrator that actually has a British/English accent. Switching between both was too distracting, and the fabricated accent not the best. The FMC sounded whiny most if the time, and the MMC sounded too annoyed all the time.

Goodison story, narration took away from it

I only listened to the entire thing because I bought it and I liked the storyline, however, the narration was terrible and ruined the experience for me. I cannot fairly rate the writing as my opinion will be heavily biased, based on the narration.

Narration was terrible

Esther Hatch and Abiggail Warren. A well-written story told with a most expressive narration. Entertaining with warmth and one especially rascally character. Loved the tension between Nat and Grace. Made for a delightful listen. Ms Warren's voice is a keeper for her character interpretations!!

EXCELLENT NARRATOR. CLEAN.

It is, admittedly, difficult to listen to a regency era romance delivered in an American English accent. The voices all had their proper Queens (Kings) English accent and were discernible from one another. However the bulk of the story itself was American English accented. It is disconcerting to listen to a book delivered this way as it’s more like a bedtime story with someone who is good at the voices instead of the performance of a good narrator we expect in an audio book.

Other than the delivery... it was a good book. It was not a very good or great book but was indeed a good book. The timeline was inconsistent, but not so much that you couldn’t follow. Some of the backstory needed to be fleshed out so that we had a better grasp on motivations, but as with the timeline it was easy enough to follow.

Do I recommend using a credit for this book... perhaps not. I don’t regret using mine but being American the accent didn’t bother me like it did some people. I listen in order to have a respite from the drama and chaos of our new modern world, as an escape or vacation from the times we live in, especially now as 2020 turns to 2021. For this purpose I loved this book, it held my attention from start to finish.

Concerning the narrator....
