Publisher's summary

An inside look at today's special operations sniper and an in depth look at the career of Chris Kyle from those who knew him and fought alongside him.

Most people think of snipers as shooters perched in urban hides, dealing out death unseen from a considerable distance. But this description barely scratches the surface. Special operations snipers are men with stacked skill sets who have the ability to turn the tide of battles, even when they aren't pulling the trigger. Snipers have played an outsized role in the War on Terror that has earned them the Medal of Honor, Navy Cross, and countless other honors. These are the most experienced warriors on the battlefield, oftentimes the units' best assaulters with years of door-kicking under their belt. These are the men who run ops in small teams across borders, or dress like locals and pull off high-risk vehicle reconnaissance and singleton missions in non-permissive environments.

Chris Martin's Modern American Snipers tells the inside story of some of the most heroic patriots in recent American history by the friends and colleagues who knew them best, including:
* The Legend - Chris Kyle, SEAL Team 3 Chief and the most lethal sniper in U.S. military history
* The Reaper - Nick Irving, the first African American to serve as a sniper in the 3rd Ranger Battalion, and its deadliest, with 33 confirmed kills
* Robert Horrigan, Delta sniper who played a critical role in Operation Anaconda
* Don Hollenbaugh, Delta Operator who earned the Distinguished Service Cross while embedded with a Marine platoon in the First Battle of Fallujah
* And many more

Critic reviews

“Readers...will want to check out this book. It goes beyond typical notions about snipers - lethal combatants concealed far from their targets - to show them as experienced, often-decorated combat leaders conducting high-risk missions.” —Pittsburgh Tribune-Review

“Written in a fast-paced rat-a-tat-tat style that makes it a snappy read, but also highly informative, with enough technological information to interest aficionados, and enough story to keep a novice reading and following along with all the jargon. A fascinating exploration into the world of elite military operatives.” —San Francisco Book Review

“Special-operations snipers are responsible for "the most outrageously disproportionate contributions of any troops throughout the Global War on Terror," and the SOFREP.com writer tries to make his case in this compendium of special-forces stars.” —Military Times

One of the better spec ops books

I like pretty much everything. The accounts of many different people in all the different situations, was very enthralling. The presenter/speaker was one of the best I've listened to.

inside baseball for any student of GWOT

He put together a lot of great info that hadn't been in print before. this isn't the typical warmed over stories that are in allot of books that purport to have sniper stories. Actually has more info on delta and six along with the amazing capabilities of the 75th rangers that Noone knows of outside of the SOF community. connects dots that are out in other books makes this very satisfying

More about organizations

real good info but not much about modern snipers. Would have liked more about the men themselves, and background.

A bit if the inside story

I recommend this book for anyone interested in the stories of the snipers and Tier 1-3 units involved in GWOT. It is not about tactics, training, or equipment as much as it is about the experiences, rivalries, and stand-outs.

GWOT

Informative about America's GWOT Snipers. Enjoyed the book and the narrator does a good job of explaining acronyms some people may not know.

Textbook lecture

Full of great information but sounds like a lecture for military history class. Written on iPhone and app malfunctioned badly.

Mish-mash of stories

kind of jumbled several stories together. At times there seemed to be no clear logic to the progression. most parts about Chris Kyle were just regurgitated excerpts from American Sniper.
