About this listen

The city of Bryre suffers under the magic of an evil wizard. Because of his curse, girls sicken and disappear without a trace, and Bryre's inhabitants live in fear. No one is allowed outside after dark.

Yet night is the only time Kymera can enter this dangerous city, for she must not be seen by humans. Her father says they would not understand her wings, the bolts in her neck, or her spiky tail--they would kill her. They would not understand that she was created for a purpose: to rescue the girls of Bryre.

Despite her caution a boy named Ren sees Kym and begins to leave a perfect red rose for her every evening. As they become friends, Kym learns that Ren knows about the missing girls, the wizard, and the evil magic that haunts Bryre.

And what he knows will change Kym's life.

Reminiscent of Frankenstein and the tales of the Brothers Grimm, this debut novel by MarcyKate Connolly stands out as a compelling, original story that has the feel of a classic.

6.5 out of 10 interesting character

so the main character is pretty neat. a young girl with large wings, a poisonous barbed tail, and the claws and eyes of a cat although she can finally forgets that she can fly on multiple occasions not to mention that she has literal books about gaslighting in her home that she has read and fails to see the signs of it being used on her. I have a couple other little details but I don't care enough to write them down. this book is okay. great for young readers in the 13 to 15 age range 6.5 out of 10

I'm SOBBING

I read this book all in one night as a child and I kept the book ever since. As the years went on I forgot most of its contents, aside from a few key moments in the story I remembered as if they were my own memories... almost like how Kymera remembered her own past. all I knew was that I loved it. So when I got a new job as a horticulturist and needed something to pass the time, and picked up audible thanks to a coworkers suggestion, I thought revisiting this book would be a great time and easy listening. I did not expect to be so fully enthralled and quite frankly hyperfixate on it instantly.

Simply, an amazing story. Even coming back to it with the few memories I had, therefore knowing some of the twists and turns of the story, I was still on the edge of my seat and so totally invested. I love Kym, Ren, Greta... I love the fairy tale elements and I love how genuine and sweet and heart wrenching the whole experience was. Brittany Pressley genuinely made the story though, her voice was PERFECT for Kym and she had such range for every single person who spoke. Kym and Ren's voices were my favorites, as well as Aria's, but every single character was so unique and well done I didn't even need the narration to clarify who spoke, it was that distinct. SUCH an amazing performance and story, the ending has me absolutely in shambles.

I've seen people bash this book for its mature writing and themes but I think it is a MASSIVE reason why this book holds up and is so good. It doesn't treat it's audience like idiots, this is a book a child or an adult can enjoy and the best kind of children's media usually accomplishes this. People also may not know, but MONSTROUS was originally written to be a young adult story that was changed to middle grade. So it's safe to say the tone makes perfect sense, this is a story for/about tweens and young teenagers. Kym and Ren are just beginning their maturity and I think the way Kym's feelings and thoughts, specifically about Ren, are expressed with such beautiful elegance that also accounts for her wholesome disposition and experience in life, the way she doesn't expect anything from Ren or for things to change when she slowly realizes her feelings for him is amazing. They have better chemistry than other actual young adult romance novels I've read, more mature and in depth at the same time as being sweet and innocent, the perfect soulmate vibes in my opinion. Basically, this book isn't just meant for children and honestly kids deserve well written fiction like this, my child self certainly appreciated it and held onto it for life.

I will definitely be reading more from MarcyKate Connolly, and looking for more to listen to from Brittany Pressley. Total 10/10 😭😭😭💕
