About this listen

A classic about the American West and the life and times of one tough cowboy, Monte Walsh. Partial to pretty women, gambling, and practical jokes, Monte doesn't have to look far to find trouble. Luckily for him, Monte's best friend, Chet, is always there to post bail or quickly get Monte out of town. As Monte grows older, though, and the West inevitably changes, he resists changing with it, and shows his dedication and loyalty to the cowboy way of life.

The popular 1970 film starring Lee Havin and Jack Palance is loosely based on this moving story by Jack Schaefer.

Dreamscape is proud to present Monte Walsh, a classic American western not to be missed.

Monte Walsh is a man few are like but many rightfully strive to be. this book tells his story from boyhood through his later years, from after the civil war till the end of the wild west. Monte's love of horses and strong sense of individualism keep the spirit of the west alive and is a must read for western fans as it truthfully earns the title of CLASSIC WESTERN.

Exuberant, energetic, and raw.
There’s a reason our National identity is all tied up with the relatively brief period of the cowboy era.
Monte Walsh is about as American as a story gets. It’s long. I listened to it on and off all fall. I still didn’t want it to end.
One of the greats.

I like books that encourage you to be better than you are. Books that have great story, yet leave you with more thanhan you expected. The bo d between two cowboys that knows no distance or time. I was sorry the book ended, and shed tears for Monte, his horse, and Chet

This is one of my favorite books I’ve listened to. I hope one day to be remembered the same some day

I’ve seen both Monte Walsh movies multiple times. I’ve tried reading the paperback of this book many times but for some reason just never made it through. So I was a little hesitant to try this audiobook. But I am so glad that I did. The performance is great. Soon you know which character is talking just but their voice. And the story is so much fuller and richer than the already very good movies. Loved this book.

Great Performance

The first time I read "Monte Walsh" was in high school, and I believe many of the lessons taught in this book about character and camaraderie prepared me better for the real world than college ever could. Schaefer never fails to bring characters to life and his stories never fail to interest. Re-reading this book now with an additional decade of living behind me, it rings more true than before. Dove reads the story excellently and in a manner fitting the setting of the story, familiar and easy in tone, and allows the listener to imagine the scenes with ease. I will very likely listen to it again in the near future.

Wonderful story!

Of course still revered by those who care to remember as among the genre's highest achievements. Overflowing with hard, simple courage, high spirits, wild humor and the passage of time forever into the immutable past. Episodic and meandering, marked by thrilling action and life and death and friendship. At it's center, an unforgettable character for whom change is unthinkable and almost a crime to contemplate. While the colorful characters around him grow and move on to higher achievement in the notice of the wider world, they seem the poorer for it against Monty Walsh.

Timeless, loping, Western Classic
