About this listen

Everyone was dead. Indian raiders massacred the entire wagon train. Only seven-year-old Hardy Collins and three-year-old Betty Sue Powell, managed to survive. With a knife, a faithful stallion, and the survival lessons his father taught him, Hardy must face the challenges of the open prairie as they head west in search of help. Using ingenuity and common sense, Hardy builds shelters, forages for food, and learns to care for Betty Sue. But their journey through this hostile wilderness is being tracked by even more hostile men. And, as he struggles to keep them alive, Hardy realizes that their survival may depend on his ability to go far beyond what his father had been able to teach him.

This book was well written and well read. It featured a surprise hero and kept my interest from beginning to end.

Excellent! The characters were well-developed and demonstrated a variety of human natures, from the base to the noble. Big Red was amazing.

Kept us at the edge of our seats!

We have listened to most of Louis L’Amour’s books and really enjoyed this one. Very different because of the children being the main characters, All comes together at the end.

My favorite L'Amour

This stand alone book is very different from the typical western focused on a child.

Vintage L'Amour

Louis L'Amour must have spent a fair bit of time in the backwoods. His descriptions of the country, the effects of the weather and the loneliness of the back country are so apposite. Great story, good narration. What is not to like?

Down the long hills

I loved this story line. To have children survive so long through so much adversity was amazing and shows so much talent the author had for telling a good story.

A Good Western Novel

This was one of those hard to stop listening to Audible books. An excellent story of the West. My only problem with this story was the ages of the two main characters. At the age of 7 and 3 they had more survival skills and knowledge than I believe children of that same time would of had. If Louis had made each of them a few years older, or at least Hardy, the story would be more believable.
