About this listen

In the latest Bayberry Island romance from New York Times bestselling author of The Sweetest Summer, it might take more than a magical mermaid statue to bring together a hard-headed Navy SEAL and the mysterious artist who's loved him from afar....

Duncan Flynn long ago said goodbye to his hometown of Bayberry Island, Massachusetts, where a mermaid statue allegedly grants true love to the pure at heart. So when the injured Navy SEAL gets sent home - just in time to help his family prepare for the annual Mermaid Festival - he's not in the mood to celebrate. Nor fall in love. But during a night run on the beach, a magnificently naked woman emerges from the surf who bears an uncanny resemblance to the mermaid in Fountain Square.

Adelena Silva's otherworldly mermaid paintings have made her famous and wealthy, but Lena herself is a recluse - at least until Duncan Flynn comes home. She's secretly loved him her whole life, and is determined not to let him get away again. But will revealing her truth win his heart, or cause Lena to lose him?

Great Beach Read

Light, fun,, and a happily ever after. Just the way I like my romance books. The voice actress did a fantastic job, and the story was well written with well developed characters.

Different coming home story

Of the three books in the series, this premise was a little harder for me to accept. Duncan is a war-hardened hero, easy to accept, but the 30-year old world-traveled and celebrated female artist lead is still harboring a 14-year old girl's crush/mindset on him. The female lead names/nicknames also got a little confusing for me, but I think hers is Elena. What was even harder for me is spending so much time in their past, seemingly as much time in their past as in their present. I think the author was trying to compare and contrast a little too much/often in a time travel attempt.

And yet, I liked how the story played out and finished the series. There's a bit of action or excitement in parts. I liked how it fit in with the prior serial books and brought many of those loose ends to a final knot. It isn't my favorite in the series because there's more strife, conflict, mental confusion (actors and reader), and repetitiveness. Yet, in the end this romance is acceptable and kind of sweet.
