About this listen

Though Charlotte Sloane's secret identity as the controversial satirical cartoonist A. J. Quill is safe with the Earl of Wrexford, she's ill prepared for the rippling effects sharing the truth about her background has cast over their relationship. She thought a bit of space might improve the situation. But when her cousin is murdered and his twin brother is accused of the gruesome crime, Charlotte immediately turns to Wrexford for help in proving the young man's innocence. Though she finds the brooding scientist just as enigmatic and intense as ever, their partnership is now marked by an unfamiliar tension that seems to complicate every encounter.

Despite this newfound complexity, Wrexford and Charlotte are determined to track down the real killer. Their investigation leads them on a dangerous chase through Mayfair's glittering ballrooms and opulent drawing rooms, where gossip and rumors swirl to confuse the facts. Was her cousin murdered over a romantic rivalry...or staggering gambling debts? Or could the motive be far darker and involve the clandestine scientific society that claimed both brothers as members? The more Charlotte and Wrexford try to unknot the truth, the more tangled it becomes. But they must solve the case soon, before the killer's madness seizes another victim....

Love the reader! Good story. Development of the characters. Looking forward to the next in the series.

Mystery kept me guessing

I finished the first 2 in the “Wrexford & Sloane” series, so I continued on. The mystery wasn’t as twisted and explained as I thought the others were but I love the continuation of their relationship and the narrator is a dream to listen to. I’m moving on to book 4!

I love this narrator!

Well this was excellent. Again a subject that makes me think of Frankenstein by Shelly. But one many through the years have broached

Murder, mayhem and Charlotte back into society. On to the next!

Not crazy about the narrators sing-song delivery. Fun story and characters. Somewhat predictable. Bl bl

A delightful cast of characters set in turn of the century Great Britain. Charlotte is a strong woman raising two street orphans while running up against pro-science, pro-intellectual, (feminist) Rexford. Together they (again) use their “team” and wits to solve a series of murders. Well written & paced; with plot twists & turns to keep the listener drawn to the adventure. Narration by JC Stewart is top-notch, with all the voices & dramatic inflections to breathe life into Penrose’s novel!

Kudos to Ms Penrose (again)

The author does a good job in developing the main characters from one installment to the next. I enjoy watching them grow. The murder is something you have to let play out and just go along for the ride. The narration is also quite good which adds to the enjoyment of the characters. If you follow the series, you should like this installment.

Holds together well

Intriguing story. I don’t think I’ve ever seen this plot before. strong, smart characters surviving in a stratified society of the industrial revolution. More depth than most historic mystery romance. My new favorite author.

#3 is another winner

I can't wait for the next book. I love the slowly building relationship between Charlotte and Rexford. I had pretty much figured out who the killer was but there were twists and turns that was interesting. I like Charlotte but I love the Earl and his logic. Hope I don't have to wait a year for next one.

One of My Favorite Authors and Characters!
