About this listen

When the body of a renowned British archeologist is found inside a sarcophagus he was bringing back from a dig in Egypt, Redmond and Haze must determine who aboard the Sea Witch had reason to want him dead. The method of murder suggests it was someone familiar with the funerary rites of the Ancient Egyptians, casting suspicion on members of the expedition, but there were others aboard the vessel who might have harbored a grudge against Blake Upton for reasons unconnected to the dig.

Confronted with professional jealousy, affairs of the heart, simmering resentment, and corrosive blame, Redmond and Haze must solve the case before the killer strikes again.

Perfect for fans of C.S. Harris and Anne Perry.

I thoroughly enjoy all Irina Shapiro’s works. I particularly like the Redmond and Haze series. The great thing about reading any good series of books is that you begin each book knowing you’re going to like the characters…you’re visiting friends!

I have listened to the series from the start and each one has kept my attention to the end. This was quite an unusual type of murder and quite fascinating. The manner of death was a new one indeed! And as always the book ends on a cliffhanger.

Always a fun listen

I loved this historical whodunit staring Captain Jason Redmond and Inspector Daniel Haze. Like the other books in the series, it had a layered storyline, an intriguing mystery, surprising plot twists, and suspense. I couldn’t put it down until they wrapped up the case. Jason and Daniel are portrayed as real, relatable and complex people who have flaws and scars, but are really just trying to do their best as messy humans. Captain Jason Redmond is an American surgeon who is currently living in England after inheriting the estate and title of his grandfather. He and his wife have just had their first child and they have plans to move to London. Daniel Haze is now working as a detective inspector in London for Scotland Yard. His wife, Sarah, and his daughter are still back in Birch Hill. The couple is having difficulty after Sarah’s choices against the man responsible for their first son’s death. Daniel requests Jason’s help in London when a murder victim is discovered when a sarcophagus is unloaded from a recently docked ship. The investigation leads Daniel and Jason to unlikely places, many dead ends, and surprising revelations. As always, there are smaller side personal story arcs which enrich the main plot line and give the characters greater dimension. The story was well written and included engaging dialogue, three dimensional characters, and a captivating storyline. I am excited to continue reading to this series.

Wendy Wolfson did a phenomenal job narrating the story and characters into life with enough change of inflection, tone and cadence to voice multiple characters quite convincingly.

A great regency period murder mystery by Irish Shapiro. A body found stuffed into an Egyptian sarcophagus just unloaded from the Ship the Sea Witch upon its return to England is discovered at the museum. Interesting with twists and unexpected turns.

I liked that I was not able to figure out who was the culprit until the very end! And what a surprise!! I’ve read so many mysteries throughout my life I can usually figure out ‘whodunnit’ at the halfway point.. not this time! With each new book by Irina Shapiro, I think this one is my favorite until she writes the next story.. she never fails to craft an entertaining and pleasing tale that immerses one in the complexities of the story. Well done!!

Unexpected ending to intrigue on the high seas!

Absolutely fun

Felt it very intriguing with the subtle weaving of relationships. The process of digging up the facts unearthing personal prejudice that blinds truth. Irina has a gift to draw the reader into discovery of internal conviction giving unexpected grace to our fellow man. Her words compel the reader to being their better self, to pause and reflect.

The Sleuthing out of Suspects right to the very end!
