Local guitar teachers seem like a great option at first, but you could risk getting stuck with a wannabe rock star who can't really teach you. Or you could try books, but most books are far too bulky and will leave you no better than where you started. Strumming a chord or two is not enough, nor is shredding a mindless solo piece. If you do not understand the essentials of music theory, you will never learn to truly play the guitar.

Many famed music producers are known for a particular sound that has its day. Rick Rubin is known for something else: creating a space where artists of all different genres and traditions can home in on who they really are and what they really offer. He has made a practice of helping people transcend their self-imposed expectations in order to reconnect with a state of innocence from which the surprising becomes inevitable. Over the years, he has learned that being an artist isn’t about your specific output, it’s about your relationship to the world.

Clearly explained
This book has many good points and it is well written for the novice or more seasoned. Other books are usually a bit dry and dull. But this one is refreshing and inspiring. Well done!

Great advice
I have played guitar for over ten years but never really understood what I was doing. To me it sounded good, but I had no idea why or how to capitlize on it. This book explains the why, how and much more. This book would be a great resource in the future for me again and again.

sometimes difficult to listen
the narrator does not sound familiar with music theory so it can be difficult to understand every once in awhile

Worst ever. Sorry.
Examples of the quality of grammar used in this book:
"Hard work requires persistent and positive about your work."
"If you [really listen to music], then you'll realize why the lyrics and why the music."
Examples of the quality of the ideas in this book:
"When you work hard in a determined fashion on your ideas, you get to where you want to go. This phase is where the real work is done." (The phase being referenced is "when you work hard".)
"A common mistake of songwriters is using familiar ideas, or ideas used several times."
'The first step in understanding music is to really understand the music.' (From memory. May not be an exact quote.)
I gave up about half way through the book. I notice it is a self-published book. I recommend that the author hire an editor, and wish him well.
