About this listen
In Northern India, the Malwa have created an empire of unexampled evil. Guided or possessed by an intelligence from beyond time, with new weapons, old treachery, and an implacable will to power, the Malwa will sweep over the whole Earth. Only three things stand between the Malwa and their plan of eternal domination: the empire of Rome in the East, Byzantium; a crystal with vision; and a man named Belisarius, the greatest commander Earth has ever known....

Story
In the future there is no want, no war, no disease nor ill-timed death. The world is a paradise - and then, in a moment, it ends. The council that controls the Net falls out and goes to war. Everywhere people who have never known a moment of want or pain are left wondering how to survive. But scattered across the face of the earth are communities which have returned to the natural life of soil and small farm. In the village of Raven’s Mill, Edmund Talbot, master smith and unassuming historian, finds that all the problems of the world are falling in his lap.

Mars is changing. Seemingly overnight the once "Red" planet is turning to gray. Something is happening, something unnatural. A team of, literally, rocket scientists figure out a way to send a probe, very fast, to Mars to determine how and why it is changing. However, when the probe is destroyed well short of the formerly red planet, it's apparent that Mars is being used as a staging ground. The only viable target for that staging ground is Earth.

Imperial Intelligence couldn't find them, the Imperial Fleet couldn't catch them, and local defenses couldn't stop them. It seemed the planet-wrecking pirates were invincible. But they made a big mistake when they raided ex-commando leader Alicia DeVries' quiet home/work, tortured and murdered her family, and then left her for dead. Alicia decided to turn "pirate" herself, and stole a cutting-edge AI ship from the empire to start her vendetta. Her fellow veterans think she's gone crazy, the Imperial Fleet has shoot-on-sight orders. And, of course, the pirates want her dead, too.

Story
The Persian King Artaxerxes rules an empire stretching from the Aegean to Northern India. As many as 50 million people are his subjects. His rule is absolute. Yet battles can be won - or lost - with a single blow. Princes fall. And when the dust of civil war settles, the Spartans are left stranded in the heart of an enemy's empire, without support, without food, and without water. Far from home, surrounded by foes, it falls to the young soldier Xenophon to lead the survivors against Artaxerxes' legendary Persian warriors.

A young, naïve but ultimately courageous hedge knight, Ser Duncan the Tall towers above his rivals—in stature if not experience. Tagging along is his diminutive squire, a boy called Egg—whose true name is hidden from all he and Dunk encounter. Though more improbable heroes may not be found in all of Westeros, great destinies lay ahead for these two . . . as do powerful foes, royal intrigue, and outrageous exploits. Featuring more than 160 all-new illustrations by Gary Gianni, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is a must-have collection that proves chivalry isn’t dead—yet.

An artificially intelligent, self-constructing factory, it was supposed to aid the crew in their mission, to meet their every need.

In this alternate history of the American frontier and the Jacksonian era, a small change takes place in the Battle of the Horseshoe Bend during the War of 1812. What results is a cascade of new developments that becomes an avalanche. In our world, Ensign Sam Houston, just turned 21, led the charge on the creek barricade in that battle and almost died from a terrible wound that took him a year to recover from. In this world, his wound is minor, so he is able to continue fighting the British—and develop his close relationship with Andrew Jackson much sooner.

Humanity's thousand-year-old interstellar empire has been rotting from the inside for over a century, thanks to venal, corrupt, and power-hungry sovereigns from a dynasty many consider illegitimate. The latest in that lineage, an increasingly psychotic empress, is pushing her realm toward collapse as admirals and generals rebel against her rule. That rebellion quickly drags the once mighty Imperial Fleet into a devastating fratricidal conflict between factions.

Story
25 BC. Titus Cervianus is no ordinary soldier. A former surgeon from the city of Ancyra, he's now a capsarius—a combat medic. Cervianus is a pragmatist, a scientist and truly unpopular with his legion. The Twenty Second Deiotariana have been sent to deal with uprisings and chaos in Egypt. Yet the Twenty Second is no ordinary legion either. Founded as the private royal army of one of Rome's most devoted allies, the king of Galatia, their ways are not the same as the other legions, a factor that sets them apart and causes friction with their fellow soldiers.

An excellent tale read by an excellent narrator.
This is my first attempt at anything written by Flint or Drake, but I’ve already purchased the next in the series! And Pete Bradbury, too, is new to me , and excels at his craft, bringing this great tale to life. Well done in all ways!

Great book from a fantastic writer, well performed
If you have never read anything by Eric Flint, that's your loss. Go now and make it good!
This book starts a sextology -- no relation to the forbidden s-word -- i.e. a series of 6 books -- telling a great what-if pseudo-history tale.
What-if... Persia and Rome didn't fight endlessly?
What-if... Belisarius didn't conquer European barbarians nor ended in exile?
What-if... Rome and Axum became allies and fought India together?
What-if... they also had developed gunpowder?
Add to this mix a cast of incredible characters - some serious, some funny, some disgusting, none of them boring or stupidly written.
The performance is quite adequate, not incredible but not bungled, all the voices are distinguishable. My only issue is with pronunciation of some names.

One of the best series ever written
I'm quite ecstatic this this book has been brought into audible form. I remember reading this when I was in the Marine Corps and the series helped me pass many a cold night. Now - All that's left for audio books is for you guys to get Falkenburg's Legion by Jerry Pournelle completed and my life will be complete. Thanks again and well done performance. The voice is matched very well with the story.

I've been waiting for this series to get on here
This is one of my favorite series that got me into ready more of David Drake and Eric Flints other series. It is a great alternate history saga with well developed characters. Pete Bradbury did a great job with the reading.

Perfectly performed - top-drawer writing
I've listened to pretty much everything Drake has on audible. In addition to being a very well-told story, this book is also amazingly well performed by Pete Bradbury. Unlike many other audio books, including Drake's latest Leary book: "To Clear Away the Shadows," this one has none of the obvious pasted-in audio edits, character-tone errors, and mispronounced words one hears.
This is about as close to perfection as you can get. (Another superbly narrated book is The Diamond Age, by Neil Stephenson, narrated by Jennifer Wiltsie.)
If you like Drake, BUY THIS BOOK!
And if you are the publisher, PLEASE get Pete working on the rest of the series!

Very Good Historical SF/MF
Circa CE 530 Belisarius is the Roman Empire’s most distinguished general. He commands legions of elite Thracian Kataractēs and mercenaries. He’s a master of martial strategy and tactics, and deadly with a sword. He also has a mysterious and secret benefactor called Aid. Aid is from the future. Together they must defeat Link, Aid’s archenemy, at all costs, or there won’t be a future for humanity.
The story is interesting and well written despite much too much repetitiveness and superfluity of choice nouns (“mutter, mutter, mutter”). The narration is excellent too.
Highly recommended.

An AMAZING series
There are very few series that have impacted me the way this one has. I don’t ever read anything twice because there are so many books out there to read the first time. But I am making an exception with the series.
If you like history and intrigue and great battles in sweeping stories with well developed, personalities, strong relationships, and most of all the triumphs redemption…of good over evil, then read this book. Read this series. But do it slowly. You will only get one chance to read it for the first time. That will be a profound experience. I envy you.
