About this listen

An incredible novel strength and resilience that celebrates the tremendous spirit of the immigrant pioneers in America

My Ántonia chronicles the life of Ántonia, a Bohemian immigrant woman, as seen through the eyes of Jim, the man unable to forget her. Jim, now a successful New York lawyer, recollects his upbringing on a Nebraska farm. Even after twenty years, Ántonia continues to live a romantic life in his imagination. When he returns to Nebraska, he finds Ántonia has lived a battered life and is now abandoned by the very man to whom she dedicated her life. Jim wonders now if he will ever again see the vibrancy of life and incredible courage that he once knew in Ántonia....

I have enjoyed this book so much, a lovely story. It’s definitely worth a second listen to!

Delightful book.

I taught this book to my high school American Literature class. it is a beautiful story about an innocent time. The reader does an excellent job letting the visuals flow, by not using too much inflection. The writing style is Primitive Modernist, and this is why some reviewers thought the story dull. it intentionally does not have a climactic, cathartic moment, but instead is a rolling narrative about a western small town community. Highly recommend!

Feels more like reading somebody’s journal, a sort of parade of disparate characters and locations without any plot. Although some characters reappear, there isn’t much development, or any real story arc. The main character feels more like a narrator. Wooden, dull reading.

I picked this up to learn about the lives of the pioneers, starts out very good, but sentiment and love intrigues spoil it a bit

First 1/4 good, rest kind of boring

Like a biography, it was filled with realistic descriptions. I appreciate being reminded how life was for previous generations and how differently yet similarly they thought.
