Publisher's summary

Available as an audiobook for the first time, read by band members "Fat Mike" Burkett, Eric Melvin, Erik "Smelly" Sandin, and Aaron "El Hefe" Abeyta along with special guest narrator musician and comedian Tommy Chong. In addition, the audiobook features exclusive, previously unreleased tracks, "Bouncy" (a NOFX instrumental), "La Pieta" (Fat Mike piano & vocal song about his mother), and "Young Drunk & Stupid" (live NOFX song from an Idaho basement gig in 1986)

NOFX: The Hepatitis Bathtub and Other Stories is the first tell-all autobiography from one of the world's most influential and controversial punk bands. Fans and non-fans alike will be shocked by the stories of murder, suicide, addiction, counterfeiting, riots, bondage, terminal illness, the Yakuza, and drinking pee. Told from the perspective of each of the band's members, this audiobook looks back at more than 30 years of comedy, tragedy, and completely inexplicable success.

I Laughed, I Cried, I Learned.

This is an amazing book. I heard of NOFX, but never knew their story. This book hooks you from the first chapter. Makes you wonder why and builds from that curiosity.

If you ever wondered what it's like being in a band. I can say from first hand experience. This book is it.

One of my favorite books of all time.

I have listened to this an it's entirety 4 times in the last year, & it has continued to be my favorite book, period. Happiness, sadness, laughter, embarrassment... it's all there in this book.
Plus, NOFX is one of my favorite bands... but beyond that, I HIGHLY recommend this book to any and all. Especially if your a fan of punk music.

These Guys Have Heart

I'm not a fan of NOFX, but heard good things about the audiobook. These guys are idiots, but learned from mistakes and are brutally honest and have heart. I did t know the Southern Californian punk scene was so violent in the 80's. It's a cleverly told and sometimes disturbing/very gross.

All the emotions!

I laughed, I cried and mostly cringed at the disgusting truth. The book was great and already recommended it to several people. I was a fan of NOFX music but now I'm even more so now. I appreciate the raw unfiltered openness. I ripped through this one in a week. These guys have survived so much and did a great job telling their story. It started with piss drinking and ended with piss. Well done!

In depth look into a band

As is with most biographies/memoirs you know what you're expecting but the stories in this book are extremely revealing and personal. Have that actual band members narrate the book adds a level of intimacy to the entire thing. I am a fan of the band but never actually knew much about the individuals in the band. This brings the band into a whole new light when I'll listen to their music.

A Suprisingly Human Story

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Highly recommended. The audiobook features the bandmembers themselves sharing their stories. Fascinating to hear their take on the same incidents years ago. Sure, it's chock full of crazy punk rock stories, but there's a surprisingly self-reflective component to some of the narratives. Underneath it all, there are themes of persistence and redemption. And yes, there is a hepatitis bathtub.

What did you like best about this story?

Fat Mike is the front man of NOFX. And his over-the-top clowness comes across in the narrative -- but he keeps the walls up. Fat Mike acts as a dispassionate character, almost an observer to the history. This book is Eric Melvin and Erik "Smelly" Sandin's story. We learn of Smelly's troubled family life and how this damaged him considerably, and his horrible descent into becoming a junkie. Melvin shares deep secrets from his past, and how this affected him as well.

I also enjoyed the share-of-voice given to two previous bandmates that would otherwise be a historical footnote, but who instead share their own personal narratives. (In the audio version, their stories are read by Tommy Chong and Jello Biafra [of the punk band the Dead Kennedys]).

Which character – as performed by the narrators – was your favorite?

Eric Melvin's narrative was amazing. You could hear the emotion in his voice as he was recounting particularly painful memories. You felt like he was talking to you, versus reading to you. (Conversely, the choice of Jello Biafra to serve as a stand-in for the voice of their former guitarist was painful for listening to. It sounded like he was unfamilar with the content he was reading [a cold read], and his campiness really was too over the top. Biafra's natural voice seethes with sarcasm, and it underminded the narrative.

Any additional comments?

I'm a NOFX fan. So I loved the little pieces of information about the band lore. And I'm an aging punk rocker, so I loved all of the recollections of the 80s punk scene (especially the early 80s LA hardcore scene).
But would an individual who doesn't care about NOFX or punk enjoy this book? I think so. If only from an anthropological perspective.

A wild ride!!

Easily the most entertaining book I've ever listened to, ever! Crazy story after another that had me constantly cringing and saying out loud "Jesus!", and I'm not religious. Most amazing thing is they come across so likable and good hearted. I even shared some of Stinky's drug stories with my 13 year old to show him how far down drugs could take him. Highly, highly recommended.
