Publisher's summary

Finding the truth in a family shattered by lies, betrayal, and murder is a deadly gamble in a twisting novel of suspense by Joe Hart, Wall Street Journal bestselling and Edgar Award-winning author of Or Else.

Family advocate Nora McTavish is settling into her new practice when she receives a call from Tess Grayson, a childhood friend she hasn’t spoken to in years. Tess is entangled in a custody battle with her ex-husband, Neil, a popular professor at a local university. It’s getting vicious—and dangerous.

Rumors are swirling of Neil’s affairs with students, one of whom was found bludgeoned to death. Though the charges against him were dropped, Tess doesn’t want the man anywhere near their nine-year-old daughter. But as Nora digs deeper into the shattered Grayson marriage, she sees more sides to the story than anyone anticipated. Which side can she trust is the question.

Old secrets and lies are beginning to emerge—some from Nora’s own past—and as suspicions begin to shift, another murder draws Nora perilously close to a killer. This time she’s not just betting her reputation on a case. She’s betting her life on it.

Couldn’t stop listening

Second in the series, the first book was also very good. Very gripping. I can’t wait to hear more from this series!

Great Mystery Thriller

This was a great follow-up to the first book, even as I started to puzzle the pieces together I remained intrigued and questioning until the very end when it all was revealed.

Addicting!!

OMG!! This an enthralling read that kept me on the edge of my seat throughout. The pace is relentless, and Nora McTavish's journey into the tangled web of lies and betrayal of her past is both captivating and suspenseful. With surprising twists and compelling characters. The actions that some of the characters did were very believable and I could see it happen in real life. Looking forward to seeing what happens next in Nora's world.

Highly recommended for fans of suspenseful thrillers!

Plotting too convoluted

With a few tweaks this could have been a much better book. It always frustrates me when the author requires too much suspension of belief by having characters do things that stretch the boundaries of normal behavior at critical plot points. The result is something akin to episodic TV. The narration by Kate Rudd was what I’ve come to expect from her. She emotes in too narrow a range, speaking almost entirely in what I’d call depressive down speak. Although, to be fair, that could also result from insufficient or bad direction.

Never come back

This is an excellent book that kept my attention from start to finish. This book was easy to follow but still had enough going on to make you pay close attention. Nora is a Family Advocate. Nora gets a call from from an old friend she hasn't seen in years. (Tess). Tess is trying to keep (Neil) her ex from getting custody of there daughter (Kindra). A lot of past memories haunts Nora. This book is very entertaining. I highly recommend trying it if you like this genre. Kate Rudd does an excellent job narrating this book. Great listen!

Nora McTavish is back! The former CPS officer is now on her own as a family advocate. This story has two things happening…Nora is helping a special needs couple regain custody of their preschool daughter; then a childhood friend requests her advice on gaining sole custody of her daughter. Except, helping her friend may turn deadly. Enjoying this series.

Okay... not great

I wouldn't really call this a thriller -- and I don't think the author has spent much time around 9 year old girls, because they don't talk the way the child in this book did. Example: calling her father a "luddite" as if that's a word 9 year olds know and use regularly, etc. The narrator was ok, but I did not like the way she read the Tess Character. Just ok in general.
