About this listen

For listeners of Finlay Donovan is Killing It and The Bandit Queens comes a bright and biting thriller following Cordelia Black, a best friend, a businesswoman, and, in her spare time, a killer of bad men.

Ask Cordelia Black why she did it. The answer will always be: he had it coming.

Cordelia Black loves exactly three things: her chosen family, her hairdresser (worth every penny plus tip), and killing bad men.

By day she's an ambitious pharma rep with a flawless reputation and designer wardrobe. By night, she culls South Louisiana of unscrupulous men—monsters who think they've evaded justice, until they meet her. Sure, the evening news may have started throwing around phrases like serial killer, but Cordelia knows that's absurd. She's not a killer, she is simply karma. And being karma requires complete and utter control.

But when Cordelia discovers a flaw in her perfectly designed system for eliminating monsters, pressure heightens. And it only intensifies when her best friend starts dating a man Cordelia isn't sure is a good person. Someone who might just unravel everything she has worked for.

Soon enough Cordelia has to come face to face with the choices she's made. The good, the bad, and the murderous. Both her family, and her freedom, depend on it.

this was such a fun read, the audio wasn’t my favorite but the story was so good that it didn’t bother me. overall 4 stars!!

entertaining start to finish

It took me a while to get through this one just because it was so ridiculous and the main character wasn't likeable. I don't think MCs need to be likeable all the time but if they're not, they need to be charismatic. And I didn't find Cordelia particularly compelling. It all felt very paint by numbers (down to the literal blood paintings). sigh. it's possible that the cover raised my hopes too much. it's such a fun cover. I think this book could be an enjoyable beach read if you just want some female empowerment vengeance murder tropes thrown together with some ridiculous panic spiral decisions.

Silly Murdery beach read

I literally was on the edge of my seat on every turn! Soo soo good! Reminded me why I liked Dexter so much when I watched it!

Insanely good!

Reminds me of butcher and blackbird without romance. I adored this book. It’s different and I love it. Worth every penny!

fantastic

I enjoyed the characters and the flow of the book. Easy to listen to but kept my attention which isn’t easy. But I never zoned out during this book or wished it was over already. I think it needs a part two!

Worth the credit for sure!

It started off good but got kind of silly but I finished it and I wouldn’t mind reading something else of this author.

An avenging woman

This was a decent book. Decent character development and visual details. There was a fun turn of events in the middle that made it pretty fun. I guess my problems with it were… (while carefully trying to avoid spoilers).
1) Believability. Some elements were a bit of a stretch.
2) Based on some of the main character’s issues, I thought the book would delve a bit deeper into her backstory and see more resolution or acknowledgment of the effects of those issues.
3) The narration was not bad, but not the greatest. I can’t handle a bad narrator, so it’s definitely not that. I definitely finished the book and it was fine, but they definitely weren’t the best.

Overall, a solid 3 stars. ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️

Emma Wells introduces the world to Cordelia Black, and I hope there are more of her stories to come! Fans of serial killer dramas like Dexter, will definitely be entertained by Cordelia and her monsters.

Strong female lead

story was predictable but baseline enjoyable mostly due to narrator’s energy. throughout, the author makes a recurring point how “people don’t think serial killers wear high heels” but seems to have completely erased the femme fatale trope from memory. main character uses lust and flirtation to lure in victims—the only minor twist in this generic addition to the genre is the somewhat pandering “bad men” obsession. i think it’s timely and encapsulates our moment but i also do not think that’s a good thing. this feels like watching a lifetime movie in the early 2000s, which—again—isn’t NOT enjoyable. i’m just left w the question of whether it even needed to be made.
