Publisher's summary

Pain, horror, fear - these are the things that have comprised best-selling novelist Lance Metzger's life. His childhood remains a riddled wasteland of abuse by a sadistic father and abandonment by an apathetic mother. In turn his only refuge became his writing.

When Lance loses his ability to write and becomes haunted by a nightmare that he'd thought was buried, he is drawn inexplicably to a house on the shores of Lake Superior, where he finds his muse once again - but something is waiting for him when he arrives. Now he must unlock the devastating secrets that the house holds and uncover the mystery of his own broken past before he loses his sanity - and perhaps his soul.

Lots of gore but good story

Love the story loved the intertwining plot and ending was amazing. The Gore was unnecessary and seem to just take up pages. Otherwise a good story and I'm very glad I got it

Very suspenseful!! Definitely a page turner!!

Mr. Hart;
I love this story!! I don't usually read horror, as I am a scary movie fan. So, expanding my "horizons" paid off big time, upon reading your story. I couldn't put it down - wishing for lunch hour to come, so I could get more in.....listening to & from work, during the commute. Thank you for sharing the ghosts in your head!!

Great story, bad narration

The narrator was one of the worst I have ever heard, without exaggeration, but the story was interesting enough for me to keep going. His intensity NEVER changed. He could be talking about a ham sandwich or a gruesome murder, it didn't matter, the delivery was exactly the same. And he spoke every word like it was a separate sentence. It was almost painful to listen to.
That said, the story was exciting, engaging and well-written, I love gruesome horror but I hate it when the bad guy gets away in the end. This was perfect for me.
I plan on checking out more Joe Hart, but staying far away from Neil Hellegers.

Good listen

It gets a little convoluted, but generally very good. I will listen to another Joe Hart book.

So Your Grandfather is a Nazi War Criminal?

I loved the introduction that sets up retribution in the waning days of WWII, a brutal act of a mass murderer. You know it has to all come back around to the murders in the concentration camp, but Joe Hart makes you wait for it. "Lineage" literally puts you in a place where you root for the lead character who desperately wants to live a better life from a childhood that still haunts him. Blood and gore galore and answers to the question of whether ghosts can actually kill.

I really enjoyed it and the uneven cadence of Neil Hellegers did not detract from the narrative. It takes a little bit to get used to, but a solid narration.

I wanted to like it...

I honestly don't have a clue how to review this one... It was my first time with this author, and honestly, I'm unsure if I'll read more.

I almost put it down after the first 20-25% because it didn't start as a gothic ghost story, which I expected. Then it picked up steam. And I was into it. It was fitting the Halloween month reads I'm trying to do this month. But then, around the 80-85% mark, it became cheesy and too drawn out.

It starts with the early years in Germany, during the war. I won't re-hash that part. Then, it moves to what appears to be a completely unrelated abuse part. Again, I won't go into that. It FINALLY moves into the ghost story I was hoping for, then becomes way too cheesy, with too much drawn-out nonsense.

I wanted to like it. It had a good premise. I mean, an author suffering through writer's block who discovers a house from his dreams? And, of course, it's "haunted"? Hmmm.. time for some more Hallo-smut stuff? Should I read more of this author?
